TIPOFFS: 8:00 p.m. Friday at Manchester High School; 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Lewis Cass High School. ByCARLGUSTIN loss on sutler's crew.

But now Staff Sports Writer "the monkey is off our back" The Lewis Cass Kings are at Manchester, and the midway through their Squires will still roll in with a toughest week of the season, and things are not looking any brighter. After a 65-59 loss to a gargantuan Northwestern team in Kokomo Tuesday, must play Manchester Tri-Central, two more groups sporting several this Friday and Saturday. The Kings have had problems with tall teams this season, whether or not they have won the game. But nothing so far has compared to 1 this week, when Cass must face three monstrous opponents in a row. And already Coach Don Shahan is cringing.

"This is definitely our toughest week of the year," he admitted, "very definitely so." -Northwestern sported a starting lineup that average right at Tri-Central iff right at the same average of and Manchester, will entertain the Kings with a starting squad that averages 'Lewis Cass carries a starting quintet averaging just "And these two teams are not just tall, they also know how to win big. Especially Manchester. looked like Coach Thomas Sutler's Squires were going to come into this Friday's nomecourt encounter with a 17-fl record, but a tough Whitko squad (now 15-2) avenged an earlier defeat to Manchester by laying a 59-58 fine 16-1 mark. And Manchester does not just squeak out their wins, because until the loss to Whitko the Squires had only had three games they had won by less than 15 points. Shahan pointed out that "our six losses now have been by a total of 21 points, and I don't think anyone is going to blow us out.

But if it's going to happen it's going to happen up there." Manachester is loaded with experience, including high- scoring guard Dave Dziabis, who leads the team with an 18-point scoring average. Center Jack Walters is 6'3" and hits for 13 points a contest, but the Kings will also be busy contending with Mark Underwood who scores at an 11-point clip. Also hi the wings are 6'3" Kyle Workman and 6'2" Scott time. WUcox, along with 6'3" substitute Dave Kline. Tri-Central is almost as big as the Squires, but with a much worse record.

The Trojans are only 7-8 thus far, but Shahan points out that "two of those losses have been to Clinton Central (currently rated 14th in the state). What is even more noteworthy is that Tri-Central lost to Clinton Central last weekend by only two points. And around Loganland? Some of the area's better teams have simply been taken apart by the Trojans. Carroll lost to Tri-Central by a 98-77 score, while Maconaquah is currently 8-1 since point guard Mike Gable returned from a 'suspension; and that loss? A 68-61 setback at Tri-Centrai. The Trojans have even better balanced scoring than Cass does, as all five starters score In double figures.

Tri- Central's names also have a familiar look, as four of five starters are back from a year ago. Forward Gary Oberlin, leads the team while scoring 17 ppg, with 6'6" Adam Wilkerson right behind at 15 per contest. S'4" Larry King and guards Tim Richey and Andy Clark all score just over 10 points an outing. The Trojans are also-set for several years into the future, as Tri-Central's Junior varsity is currently 14-1 while starting an ail-freshman front line, all of whom stand 6'4" or bigger. But Shafew is looking at this week optimistically, and he knows that this level of competition Is bound to help the Kings come sectional kind of pleased with what we're doing now," be said with pride, "because these Uds just do not quit.

The competition's there this week, that's for sure, and I don't know bow many of them we're going to win. But we'll give it our best effort and tee what happens then." The old saying goes that "You can't see the forest for the trees." Shahan found out all about that problem Tuesday at Northwestern, and he now must face the fact a horizon where the trees stretch on and least through next Lewis Cass. Bears Hire Marchibroda And Stanfel As Coaches LAKE FOREST, ID. (UPI) Ted Marchibroda, who turned the Baltimore -Colts into a playoff team by relyfng on the passing arm of Bert Jones, has been tabbed to try to do the same with the Chicago 'Bears. Marchibroda was hired Wednesday by 'Bears' head Coach Neill Armstrong to be the 'team's new offensive coordinator.

Instead of Jones, Marchibroda will rely on the passing arms of Vince Evans and Mike Phipps. In addition, the Bears announced that Dick Stanfel, who has served as offensive line coach with the New Orleans Saints for the past four seasons, has been hired in a similar capacity for Chicago next season. Marchibroda, 49, replaces Kenny Meyer, who resigned in December while Stanfel takes over for Jerry Frei, who also quit after the end ol the regular season. Marchibroda was fired by the Colts in 1979 after serving five years with Baltimore. He was an assistant coach for 14 years before taking the Colts job and was offensive coordinator under George Allen with the Washington Redskins.

"Marchibroda will be directly involved with the quarterbacks and our passing game but as coordinator," Armstrong said. "He obviously has responsibility for our running game, too. Dick Stanfel, who has been a line coach In the league since 1964, but also a coordinator with the 49ers in 1975, and he will have a lot to do with our running game." Armstrong indicated Marchibroda prefers to have his quarerterbacks call plays which would represent a re versa; of present policy. "But we will have to see how ours take to that as we get close to the regular season opener," Armstrong said. "We had some real good interviews on prospects and I think we've landed two coaches the Chicago Bears will be proud of," said.

Armstrong, who had received criticism on play selection and a reluctance to open up the team's offense during the past season. "They both have been in the league for awhile and I'm happy to have both of them."
