Public intoxication arrests totaled 24 last month to lead the non-traffic category.

This was 18 fewer than for the same month in 1976. Other arrests lart month nine; ly for the presidency with a promise that "I will never lie to you" must expect to have his words scrutinized with care, even nitpicking care. It should come as no surprise to President Carter, therefore, that a six-week-old statement he made about Richard Helms, the former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, has been put under reportorial microscopes. The aim of the exercise has been to determine whether carter is developing the kind of credibility gap that' plagued some of his predecessors. Business was down in the Danville Police Department last month, according to reports received by4 the City Commission Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters answered two more fire calls last month than in October, 1976, Chief Hubert Preston reported. There were 19 calls last month compared with 17 a year ago. The calls included five each to business places and residences, three false alarms, four trash blazes and two car fires. Fifty-six volunteer and off duty regular firemen answered the calls at a cost of $146. On Sept.

29, Carter told a broadcast news conference that -Attorney General Griffin Bell "has not consulted with me" about bringing possible criminal charges against Helms, whose testimony before a Senate committee about CIA intervention in Chile's internal affairs' had become a subject of official inquiry. Of the several million Americans who heard, saw or read Carter's statement, perhaps a thousand had a deep interest in the case at the time. Now, it is fair to assume, more thousands have at least some interest in the Helms Police made exactly half as many arrests in October, 1977, as they did the same month a year ago. Parking ticket business slumped even more with only two issued in October and five collected. In there were 736 parking tickets written and 491 collected.

Part of the drop in parking tickets is because of the removal of meters on two blocks of Main Street. 151 Arrests Made Ptl. Michael Lamb reported that Danville police made 151 arrests last month, compared with 302 in October, 1976. Eight of the arrests last month were for other jurisdictions, while 11 cases were preferred in county Court. Of the 132 cases in Danville Police Court, five were dismissed or filed away, 21 are pending and there were 106 convictions.

Speeding led the arrests for motor vehicle and traffic law violations last month with 17 40 fewer than the year previous. Other arrests under this general category last month were: driving while intoxicated, 12; expired or no operator's license, Uf disregarding red traffic report of Ptl. Lamb. Receipts of fines and costs last month totaled $5,355, while replevin bond payments amounted to $300 and installment payments were $2,459. Parking ticket receipts were $5 compared with $494.05 a year ago and $35 was received for copies of accidents.

Total receipts in October were $8,154 compared with $10,171 in October, 1974. matter, which became a front page news item last week when he pleaded no contest in federal court here to two criminal mis demeanor charges that he had failed to testify fully and accurately to the committee. fresh Fart of the fresh interest nas Hickory Sweet (2-Lbs. $1.95) till HALF POEIIC LOlfJ been prompted by a seeming contradiction between Carter's Sept. 29 statement and one 14- to 17-Lb.
