Smith is buried in the Smith burying ground in the Riverside Cemetery in Seguin. In 1802 he married Susannah Dingess in Giles County, Virginia. Their known children were Parish (Paris) Smith, born 1803; Peter Dingess Smith, born 1805; French Smith, born 1809, and married Elizabeth Hector; Gertrude and Charles Alexander (twins), born 1811; Polly and Harriet Smith (twins), born 1814. Harriet Smith married Benjamin F.

Shurlock. Ezekial Smith was a private in Captain George W. Kemp's Company of Virginia militia. He was drafted at Giles County, Virginia Court House. The com- pany was then under Captain George Ott.

Later years in Texas, Smith participated in the Runaway Scrape and was the oldest man in the Mier Expedition, 18421843. The National Archives service records give the following information: 1852, Guadalupe County, Texas, veteran before Thomas D. James, J.P., certified by Paris Smith, Clerk. That same year appeared before John F. Gordon and assigned Warrant No.

68,952 to Edward O. Johnson of New York who located the land in Alabama, attested by Joseph and Peter Farn. Another veteran of the War of 1812 from this area was Thomas Applewhite. Applewhite was born 1790 in Fordsville, Marion County, Price hikes erase gains in income WASHINGTON (AP) Americans' average personal income climbed 11.2 percent last year, but the increase was more than gobbled up by higher consumer prices, according to new government figures. The nation's inflation rate, measured by the government's consumer price index, was running at an annual rate of 12.5 percent for the first 11 months of 1980 with December's CPI figure due Friday.

After personal income increases of 1.3 percent in October and 1.1 percent in November, Commerce Department figures released Monday showed a December rise of only 0.9 percent. That placed the yearly total at 11.2 percent. Inflation rose just over 13 percent in 1979, while personal income increased 12.9 percent, according to previous government figures. The Commerce Department also reported Monday that housing starts were down slightly in December for the first time since May and that building permits for future construction were down substantially. A Commerce Department economist called the housing statistics "remarkably steady" in light of high interest rates.

But an industry spokesman said they indicated big declines coming up in a 'Very very slow" first half of 1981. In another economic development Monday, the government's Chrysler Loan Guarantee Board approved a plan under which creditors and workers at the financially troubled No. 3 automaker would make big financial concessions and the government would grant $400 million in new federal loan guarantees. A final board vote is scheduled for two weeks from now. In disposing of their income in December, the Commerce Department said, Americans increased personal- consumption spending by just 0.3 percent after recent increases of better than 1 percent per month.

At the same time, income channeled into savings grew at an annual rate of nearly 10 percent last month, in contrast to declines in October and November, the department said. At yearend, the department estimated the nation's savings rate the percentage of disposable income that people save at 5.2 percent, the same as in 1979. William Cox, the department's deputy chief economist, said December's housing performance was Surprisingly good "after all the buffeting of the buyer and the builder in the past months." Social Security pays benefits to 35 million By MARY HOLBROOK Social Security Branch Manager Social Security paid monthly cash benefits totaling $121 billion in 1980 to over 35 million men, women and children. The impact of Social Security on peoples' lives and on the economy is tremendous. These benefits represent a large part of these people's income.

Total payments represent about one-fourth of all federal expenditures. Social Security has been improved many times over the years. Coverage has been expanded so that today 9 out of 10 working people and their families are protected Disability insurance was added in the 1950's and Medicare in 1965. Automatic cost-of-living benefit increases started in 1975 and provide a cushion against inflation Social Security provides comprehensive lifetime protection people of all ages receive monthly benefits. They include the factory worker who just retired as well as his 89-year-old aunt who has been getting widow's payments since 1955.

Then there are the two young children of the woman who died of cancer, and the worker laid up more than a year after an accident. They receive checks, too. Nearly all of the people on benefit rolls receive the right check at the right address and on time each and every month. In addition to monthly benefits, there is Medicare. This helps pay costly hospital, doctor, and other medical bills for most people 65 or older, for disabled people who have been receiving benefits at least two years, and for many people with permanent kidney failure.

In 1980, Medicare paid about $35 billion on their behalf. At a time that Social Security taxes have just increased, it is important to remember the benefit side of the program as well as the tax side.
