Despite the tie with South Bend Washington, the Saints remained in first place this week in the ratings by the UPI board of coaches.

Meet Minnesota Smith Receives New Recognition NEW YORK Franklin Col lege's ace quarterback, Ed Smith, is listed among the individual leaders in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Service Bureau's football statistics for small colleges. He ranks sixth in total offense with 1,177 yards gained in 183 plays in six games.

He was in fifth place among the passers with 85 completions in 159 attempts for 1,232 yards and a completion average of .535 per cent. Franklin meets Taylor University in Upland, Saturday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. This game might decide the Hoosier College title. Annual Basketball Game Postponed TRAFALGAR The Johnson County Coaches-Ex-Players' basketball game originally slated for Monday, Nov.

2, in the Trafalgar gym is postponed until after the There is a possibility the game may not be played. This game has grown in popularity over the years and allows coaches a chance to play and the fans to see former high school stars who aided their schools' teams. Nineveh Scrimmage Set In Gymnasium NINEVEH Nineveh basketball fans are reminded that the Nineveh High School Eagles will hold a basketball scrimmage in the school gym today at 6:30 p.m. Nineveh has some good let-termen back and indications are the Eagles might post a winning record and even challenge for some tourney title. Nineveh has never won a county tourney or sectional title but has finished second several times.

LU. Tougli Berra, Stengel, Mets Team-Up Is Possible NEW YORK (UPI) Imagine Yogi Berra coming off the bench and hitting a game-winning home run for the New York Mets in the ninth inning. Don't laugh, it could happen. George Weiss, general manager of the Mets, revealed Thursday he had talked with the unfrocked managed of the Yankees about joining the Mets and will talk to him again. The Yankees have offered Berra a two-year contract as a special field assistant to GM Ralph Houk.

However, Yogi has not signed yet, explaining "I'll have to see how I feel being out of uniform." That's the catch. Yogi has spent 22 of his 39 years in a Yankee uniform. He wouldn't mind aaving the Yankees, but he's not ready yet to surrender a uniform for a business suit. "I'll have to wait to see how I would feel being out of uniform," Berra said today before leaving on a golfing vacation. "I imagine it would be kind of hard." "Soap Games" Are Scheduled Would you like to see some top-notch cagers in action? Would you like to see the defending sectional basketball champions and Franklin College's varsity and reserves? Bring a bar of soap, or more if you choose, to Franklin Community High School's gym Friday, Nov.

RANDY LEERKAMP, Franklin Community High School eager, made 15 points against the Greenwood Woodmen in the first cage contest for Coach Ted Server's team last year. Leerkamp will be a contender for a guard or forward spot this season.

COACH TOM CUMMINGS, Trafalgar, will be keen on stopping the New Palestine Dragons, the Redbirds' first opponent. Trafalgar High School's coach can well remember the upset the Dragons pulled in the Franklin Sectional. Who will be the outstanding cagers this season on Johnson county teams? Here are just a few who will probably prove deserving of that adjective: Mike Mosburg, Stan Spicer and Phil Moore, Franklin Community High School; Steve Milli-kan, Randy Bright, Nineveh; Bob Hasty, Mike Dougherty and Bill Harbert, Clark; Lehman and Raymond Heyton, Whiteland; Ron Cooper, Phil Winning, Jim Anthony and Bruce Clark, Greenwood; Mike Housand, Ricky Russ, Eugene and Bob Prather, Morgantown. More "outstanding possibilities" are Tom Bowman, White-land; Darrel Brosius, Dave Col-glazier and Dick Werts, Edin-burg; Steve Harden, Center Grove; and Bob Hynds and Mike Brownfield, Trafalgar. Others could come along and surprise everyone.

Center Grove Trojans will face a tough BROWN COUNTY in their first basketball contest Nov. 20. Brown County consistently fields good cross-country and basketball teams. SPORTS QUIZ: How many South Central basketball titles have the Franklin Community High School Grizzly Cubs won? What years did they win? SportS WorlD Mf JIM KEKKHOPF Sports Editor BLOOMINGTON If anyone is getting carried away by Indiana's consecutive victories over Michigan State and Miami, Hoosier Coach Phil Dickens has a few sobering words for him. "The hardest part of our schedule is yet to come, and it starts with Minnesota here Sat urday," says Phil.

"Minnesota is a team which has been so close that it could be coming in here with a 5-0 record instead of 2-3. Defense Problems "Everyone knows the problems we've had on pass defense and we're facing another top-notch passer in John Hank-inson. He's hitting on well over 50 per cent of his passes and we know we'll see a lot of them come Saturday." Dickens also is concerned by the return to duty of Halfback Bill Crockett, the swift Senior who has been out of action through injury. "We feel Minnesota is 35 to 40 per cent stronger when Crockett is in there," Dickens commented. "He gives them a speed and versatility of attack which makes their parsing much more difficult to defense." Proof that the Hoosiers' toughest part of the schedule is upcoming can be found in the record.

12-13-1 Record The first five opponents-Northwestern, Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan State and Miami-have a combined record of 12-13-1, and the Hoosiers absorbed one-point losses from Northwest-era and Iowa and an eight-point loss to Ohio State. Indiana's next four opponents have a collective 17-5 won and lost mark. Minnesota is 2-3; Oregon State, which Saturday blasted Syracuse, has lost only once; Oregon is still undefeated and Purdue, tie for the Big Ten lead, had lost only one. LONG WAIT ST. LOUIS The St.

Louil Cardinals waited 18 years for the National League pennant and World Series. St. Louis holds the best record of a National League team with a 7-3 won-lost mark in Series competition. They are the sole team playing five or more series to be ahead of the New York Yankees, 3 series to 2. From Tn Park Forest.
