Thomas Hearns will be shooting for a place in boxing history Thursday when he fights Juan Roldan for the World Boxing Council middleweight title at the Las Vegas Hilton Should he win Hearns would be the first fighter to have held four world titles On the face of it that would be a remarkable achievement or there is a tendency among fighters who step up in class to lose pun ching impact when they do Yet Hearns who began his pro career as a welterweight 147 pound limit) won his last title in March against Dennis Andries as a light heavyweight (175 pound limit) Hearns not only beat Andries but he showed power doing it knocking down the World Boxing Council champion six times before stopping him in 10 rounds Against Roldan Hearns is oblig ed to come in at or under the 160 pound middleweight limit or Hearns the Roldan fight may give him historic legitimacy but it remains to be seen whether the accomplishment will elevate his boxing image World titles today are not at the premium they were years ago before the sport was fractionalized by three governing bodies: the World Boxing Association the WBC and the International Boxing ederation Each of those groups has a dif ferent set of champions except in the rare instance where a title has been unified Currently only the heavyweight division has a single undisputed champion: Mike Tyson All other weight classifica tions have multiple claimants There has been further pro liferation of world titles through the relatively new so called junior weight classes for example the junior welterweight (140 pound limit) and junior middleweight 154 pound limit) divisions That is a development that has purists fondly recalling the 1950s when there were eight world champions in divisions that ranged from Boxing flyweight (112 pound limit) to heavyweight That was a time when the average boxing fan did not need a computer like memory to keep track of the titleholders Despite such arguments Hearns sees his quest for a fourth title as crucial to his standing in the sport I beat Roldan it will erase all the criticizing been getting from people because of the fact that Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler beat said Hearns seems like I get a lot of flak for that People always bring up the two losses and never what done This fight will put me in the history books and put great thoughts in Maybe or now the barb about Hearns that trails the fighter is that he win the big ones Leonard and Hagler were op ponents Hearns faced in fights that were major spectacles He failed both times the only losses on a record that shows 44 vic tories 37 by knockout While Hearns who is known as the Hit Man is recognized by most boxing experts as a powerful puncher the losses to Leonard and Hagler diminished his reputation raising questions about his staying power against opponents who can stand up to his blows Leonard not only withstood best shots he hit Hearns hard enough to force a reversal of roles during their Sept 16 1981 welterweight title showdown Hearns the stalking slugger had to turn boxer to avoid the damag ing blows of Leonard a master boxer who suddenly became the pursuing puncher Late in the fight Hearns was ahead on the official scorecards But he wilted under the firepower of Leonard who was responding to the urgent warning of his trainer Angelo Dundee blowing it Dundee said between rounds 12 and 13 Leonard scored a knockdown in the 13th round and stopped Hearns a round later Hagler was another story In their bout in April 1985 Hearns made a decision to stand toe to toe with the undisputed middleweight champion and trade punches While it lasted the exchanges bet ween the fighters were non stop and vicious Once again though Hearns unraveled as fatigue and the toll of punches turned his legs wobbly Hagler knocked him out in the third round With an impressive victory over Roldan a 30 year old Argentine with a record of 63 3 2 (41 knockouts) Hearns is hoping to become big player in the middle range weight classes In the back of his mind is the pro spect of a much desired rematch with Leonard or Hagler perhaps both But the 29 year old Hearns is no sure thing against Roldan a rough and durable opponent with a bore in style bulls his way said Hearns respect nobody But I demand my respect How demand my respect is by showing him a hard left jab rom there I think Thomas Hearns will box his way to a In the past Roldan has shown a penchant for roughhousing op ponents is not the cleanest fighter in the said Hearns not going to let him in close enough to use his head forearms and shoulders keep him fighting on the outside And tie him up when he does get Hearns won the first of his championships in August 1980 when he knocked out Pipino Cuevas in two rounds to win the WBA welterweight championship He beat Wilfred Benitez for the WBC super welterweight (aka junior middleweight) title in December 1982 MOTOR CO Pontiac Cadillac Nissan 236 3217 bnnvillc Kentucky 2 Jo.
