Sunday, November 19, 1989 The Pittsburgh Press D7 COLLEGE FOOTBALL Westoamstteir reells inn jpflayoffff win, 29-2) IUP rolls to 34-24 triumph ALLENDALE, Mich. IUP unleashed a high-powered offense against the highest-scoring team in the NCAA yesterday, coming from behind in the last 10 minutes to beat previously undefeated Grand Valley State, 34-24, in an NCAA Division II playoff game. Eric Lynch's third touchdown with 10:13 to go gave Grand Valley a 24-20 lead, but that was to be all champions. The Titans will play a second-round game on Dec. 2 against Tarle-ton (Texas) State (9-2) in Stevenville, Texas.

"All we had to do was prepare for the run," said Ruby. "We were able to just tee off and play the line of scrimmage hard." Georgetown (7-3-1) uses a wishbone offense led by 5-9, 173-pound sophomore Craig Mullins, a converted wide receiver. "Mullins was our leading receiver last year, but we needed a quarterback and he's a winner, so we made the switch," said Tigers coach Kevin Donley. "But he's not that big so we really can't use him to throw the ball." Westminster forced six turnovers, five of them fumbles. Leading the defense was Craig Schweiger, a 5-11, 205-pound senior linebacker, with eight solo tackles and eight assists.

And every time a ball squirted loose, scored two touchdowns. Westminster answered the Tigers' field goal with a 69-yard drive capped by a 10-yard pass from quarterback Joe Micchia to Chris Osborne. Tokar made the score 14-3 with a 1-yard run in the second quarter before Micchia connected from 42 yards out with Foley to make the score 21-3 at halftime. On their second possession of the third quarter, the Titans got a 10-yard touchdown run from Tokar. Dean Santorio's two-point conversion run made the score 29-3.

Forced from its running game, which got 149 yards on 57 attempts, Georgetown floundered. The Tigers gained only 6 yards passing and their touchdown came on a 39-yard interception return of a Santorio pass by Darryl Flanagan. Ruby, a 5-10, 185-pound junior, was there to fall on it. He recovered three fumbles. Westminster's job was made easier when Georgetown's Mitch Winburn left the game with a hip pointer early in the second quarter.

Winburn, a 6-1, 204-pound senior, was the NAIA Division II rushing leader, averaging 167.5 yards per game. In eight games he had rushed for 1,340 yards. Before leaving, Winburn gained 33 yards on eight carries, one a 27-yard burst that set up a 25-yard field goal by T.G. Shuck midway through the first quarter that gave the visitors a brief 3-0 lead. But Westminster has a good running back of its own in Brad Tokar, a junior from Fort Cherry who is Westminster's all-time rushing leader with 3,398 yards, tacked on 115 yards to that total with 19 carries.

College last week, but it was like watching continuous replays. All Ruby saw were handoffs up the middle, sweeps and options. Georgetown had no passing game. In 10 games, the Tigers threw just 73 passes and 12 were halfback options.

Georgetown's lack of a passing offense helped make Westminster a 29-9 winner in the opening round of the NAIA Division II playoffs yesterday at Memorial Field.
