Youngstown had tacked on two more touchdowns on a 33-yard pass from Ray Isaac to Lorenzo Davis and a 10-vard strike from redshirt junior Frank Edie to Ray Ellington.

It was the first touchdown pass of Edie's college career. Isaac had been shaken up one play before Edie's pass, but re-entered the game on the Penguins' next possession. Trailing 21-0, Edinboro moved to the Youngstown 2. But the drive stalled when Cole was thrown for a 4-yard loss on fourth down. Cole, a 5-9, 180-pound senior, finished with 81 yards on 23 carries.

"We had those two big opportunities in the first half, but came away empty," said Hollman. "The fourth-and-goal was a big play for them. Anytime you have a goal-line stand like that, the momentum changes. "We would have liked to go in (at halftime) with some points on the board." Edinboro sliced the lead to 21-7 on a two-play drive that covered 75 yards early in the third quarter. Both plays were Galupi passes to Priester, the first covering 39 yards, the second 36 yards.

Division I-AA Liberty, are expected to get a bid this afternoon to the Division II playoffs. Youngstown will need a victory at home Saturday against Towson State to secure an Division I-AA playoff slot. "We wrapped up the (Pennsylvania Conference) championship last week, but I don't think there was any letdown," said Edinboro Coach Tom Hollman. "I honestly thought we had a chance to win. Their team defense was just the quickest we've seen this year." The Penguins' speed, especially in the secondary, accounted for interceptions by Andre Peterson, Chris Vecchione, Tony Tellington and Pete Rekstis.

It was Tellington's interception in the end zone that stopped Edinboro's first serious drive with 57 seconds left in the opening quarter. After fullback Steve Jones slammed across the goal line from the 4 to give the Penguins a 7-0 lead, Edinboro drove from its 25 to the Youngstown 17. But Scots quarterback Hal Galupi, under a heavy pass rush, threw the ball right to Tellington. "I was just trying to throw it away," Galupi said. "I was surprised it was intercepted." For The Pittsburgh Press YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio Ernest Priester became Edinboro's first wide receiver to top 1,000 receiving yards in a season yesterday by grabbing 10 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

Elbert Cole became Edinboro's all-time single season rushing leader with 1,392 yards, surpassing the 1,358 mark set by Al Raines in 1971. And Edinboro's Michael Wayne, a senior inside linebacker, made 20 tackles, 14 solo. But Youngstown State spoiled those individual accomplishments with a 28-14 victory at Youngs- town's Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins' rushing attack was largely responsible for the victory, gaining 352 yards. Junior Leo Hawkins rushed 15 times for 123 yards and junior Archie Herring 20 for 112.

It was the first meeting between Youngstown, ranked 19th in NCAA Division I-AA, and Edinboro, ranked seventh in NCAA Division II. The Penguins (7-3) didn't roll out the red carpet for their visitors. They did roll up their sleeves and got physical, snapping Edinboro's eight-game winning streak. Slippery Rock finished 4-5-1.
