A new report on the safety of the south pier of the Golden Gate Bridge, which has been questioned by Professor Bailey Willis, Stanford geologist, was filed with the directors of the bridge district today by Chief Engineer Joseph B. Strauss and General Manager James Reed. They said that recent investigations "completely confirm previous borings and prove the full adequacy of the rock for the support of the pier." Inspections, they declared "showed a rock formation of such solidity as to be capable of supporting a structure many times the weight of the south pier and its ultimate load." The reports were based on inspections made at the bottom of the pier excavation by means of steel inspection wells piercing the 65-foot concrete fender seal and pier base, and giving access to the rock 100 feet below water level, as well as diamond drill borings. Professor Willis reported several months ago that the foundation is unsafe. He said i it rests on a submerged slope and "there is reason to fear the pier will slide down into the deep channel which the slope overhangs." Bridge officials answered by pointing to the reports of other geologists and with the charge that Willis was R.

Motor world by B.J ROSENTHAL Definite announcement has been made by the Howard Automobile Company through J. C.

Nagel, Eastbay sales manager, that a publie showing of new Buick dealer cars show- for 1935 be held in rooms throughout the country next Saturday, In the bay district the new models will be on display in the Howard establishments in Oakland, San Francisco and Berkeley. The new cars include four separate lines ranging from the low medium to the upper medium price bracket. They are on four wheelbases, each with an eight-cylinder valve-in-head power plant designed specifically for each chassis class. The Howard executive pointed out that the 1935 styling is a continuation of that of the Buick cars of this year. These cars were given widespread approval, he said, both by the motoring public, who purchased this year nearly double the 1933 output, and by the Buick dealer organization whose members enthusiastically approved the plan to continue the current styling.

"In the first nine months of this year, the public invested more millions of dollars in new Buicks than in any other car except the three lowest priced makes, the official stated. "Buick, therefore, is continuing without outward change the quality, the style and features which this year make Buick the sales and value leader among fine cars, with improvements and refinements this make the product better, Thank You Editor The Tribune The Long fellow A. expresses there thanks to The Tribune for thole cooperation in bringing before the public, through your press, the service we render to less fortunate children. Many thanks to you and wisher for a successful New Your. MAS.
