A new report on the safety of the) south pier of the Golden Gat Bridge, which has been questioned by Professor Bailey Willis, Stan, ford geologist, was filed with the) directors of the bridge district day by Chief Engineer Joseph Bi Strauss and General Manage) James Reed. They said that recent Investiga tions "completely confirm previous borings and prove the full adequacy of the rock for the STtpportof th pier." Inspections, they declare "showed a rock formation of sucij solidity as to be capable of sup porting a structure many times th weight of the south pier and its ultimate load." The reports were based on la spections made at the bottom o4 the pier excavation by means of steel inspection wells piercing the 65-foot concrete fender seal and pier base, and giving access to the; rock 100 feet below water level, as well as diamond drill borings. Professor Willis reported several months ago that the foundation ig unsafe. He said it rests on a submerged slope and "there is reason to fear the pier will slide dowt) into the deep channel which thu slone overhansrs." Bridue official answered by pointing to the ra pons or ottier geologists and with the charge that Willis was R. C.

Nigel, Eastbay sales manager, that a public showing of new Buick can for 1935 will be held in dealer showrooms throughout the country next Saturday.

In the bay district tht new models will be on display in the Howard establishments in Oakland, San Francisco and Berkeley. The new cars include four separate lines ranging from the low medium to the upper medium prict bracket. They are on four wheel-basei, each with en eight-cylinder valve-in-head power plant designed specifically for each chassis class. The Howard executive pointed out that the 1935 styling is a continuation of that of the Buick cart of this year. These cars were given widespread approval, he said, both by the motoring public, who purchased this year nearly double tht 1933 output, and by the Buick dealer organization whose members enthusiastically approved the plaa to continue the current styling.

"In the first nine monthi ef this year, the public invested marts millions of dollars in new Buiekt than in any other ear txetpt tht three lowest priced makes," tht official stated. "Buick, therefore, is eantinuirm without outward change the quality, the style and features which this year make Buick tht sales and value leader among fine cars, with improvements and refinement! that make the product better.
