A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "The Queen does not wish to give her patronage where she cannot give her interest also." While a pro-Cal crowd of 81,000 looked on in amazement the staunch UCLA defense throttled the vaunted California attack.

The only moment of respite for the desperate Cat forces came in the second period when Halfback Don Johnson took a UCLA punt on his own two and ran straight down the middle 98 yards for a touchdown. But that was the only serious Cal threat of the day. A fine Bruin line, spearheaded by Center Leon Evans, closed the gap at every turn and the Bear offense never got under way. UCLA scored a touchdown the first time it got its hands on the ball and it never was headed. UCLA counted one in each period, and the reserves picked up the final touchdown with only a few seconds of play remaining.

The first UCLA score came on a 68-yard march with Paul Cameron, the brilliant tailback, calling the plays. The pay-off came when Cameron passed into the end zone on fourth down to Stockert. There were two Cal defenders standing in front of Stockert but Cameron pitched the ball high and the 6-6 Bruin leaped high into the air and came down with the ball. Pete Dailey then came through with the first of four conversions. California made a gift of the second touchdown early in the second period.

California had the ball on its own 26, fourth down and one to go. The Bears elected to gamble and the play backfired with Johnny Olszewski failing to pick up the yardage and the Bruins took over, first down on the Bear 26. From there. Cameron engi-j nered his forces down to the I goal line in eight plays with; Cappy Smith plunging over for the counter. On the next kick-off, Johnson took the ball for his 98-yard ramble and the half ended with UCLA in front 14-7.

The third touchdown was more or less of a gift, too, when L'CLA got the ball on the Cal 27 when Olszewski fumbled, and John Peterson recovred for the Bruins.
