-8 Pittsburgh Press, May 25, 1 980 llAios Pater no's Offensive Boss? Ask A Realtor Press Box I I Jhn IvV 1 1 1 clayton I JOS Best Paterno quote during spring drills involved Jim Brown, the Lions' 280-pound offensive tackle who returned to the roster after a red-shirt year. Brown's weight ballooned over 300 pounds after he broke his ankle last spring. "Sometimes he can't run with that ankle, and he can run well when his weight gets up to 290, but he still likes to eat," Paterno said. Pitt fans who think Ohio State is the team to beat for the national championship take heart. The Buckeyes don't have an offensive line.

Four of the five starters of January's Rose Bowl loser have graduated, and three top replacements at tackle have been eliminated. Tim Brown and Bill Thomas are academically ineligible. Tom Lebenick seriously in-, jured a knee and is not expected to be healthy by the fall. That leaves Joe Lukens as the only-returning starter and the only bona fide major-college linemen on the team. The graduation of the Buckeyes' top two fullbacks forced Tim Spencer, a promising freshman tailback, to move to fullback.

Although he is expected to be a star, Spencer weighs 205 pounds, light by Ohio State Meanwhile, Art Schlichter had a poor spring game. The rest of the team was graded by the coaching staff as having only "fair" spring drills. Remember the Point Park basketball team's recent visit to Israel for a three-game tour against the Israeli nationals? Well, af least it was a diplomatic and cultural success. The Pioneers lost all three games by "more than 100 points." Well, it was an education. Don't be surprised if Allegheny Community College has the most successful basketball team in the city next year.

Don't be surprised if the Eastern Eight tournament takes a one-season sabbatical from the Civic Arena within the next five years and an NCAA regional takes its place. But Pitt and Duquesne must combine forces and battle for that possibility, which is like getting Israel and Egypt to agree on the liberation of Palestine. Next year may be the lightest year for major-college basketball talent among Western Pennsylvania high school seniors in recent memory. White when he switched from defensive line coach to the athletic office. Although Joe Paterno has not named a successor, John Bove, a part-time coach last year with 16 years of college coaching experience, is the leading candidate.

Bob Petchel, another part-timer, should stay in the same capacity next fall. Team speed on defense is one of Penn State's concerns for next fall. Keeping offensive players in track shoes will be another. Ten Penn State recruits have clocked times of under 10 seconds in the 100-yard dash during their high school careers. Todd Blackledge eventually will become the Lions' starting quarterback, but will spend some time during the season behind Frank Rocco and Jeff Hostetler.

Rocco has improved his confidence, throwing and running. Hostetler has proven he is not a linebacker. But Blackledge has the best arm on the squad. West Virginia football Coach Don Nehlen hasn't had much luck since assuming the job in December. Now he has no Luck at all.

Oliver Luck, the Mountaineers' flashy quarterback who excelled as a sophomore, recently fPRING CLEANING on a cluttered desk Vj and some small thoughts at large: How do real estate agents in State College fill their idle days of high inflation and low housing markets? They try to give Joe Paterno an offensive coordinator. There have been more rumors supposedly started by real estate agents than houses sold this year. First, there was the famous Galen Hall house search, when the former Lion quarterback was rumored to be looking for a State College home, thus insuring that he would become the offensive coordinator. Hall, still offensive coordinator at Oklahoma, didn't buy a home and Penn State didn't have an offensive coordinator. Next up was Roger Staubach, the recently retired Dallas Cowboy quarterback.

Staubach was reportedly investigating the purchase of a $200,000 home. Surely that would give the Lions an offensive coordinator. No deal. Staubach signed a contract to be a television commentator. But if Paterno ever signs an offensive coordinator, he knows where to pay the commission.

Incidentally, there is still an opening on Penn State's staff, the spot vacated by J.T. underwent ankle surgery. The injury, however, is not considered serious. When be accepted the job, Nehlen retained Nick Saban as the only coach from Frank Cignetti's staff. Saban, who is well respected in the Youngstown area, accepted a better opportunity at Ohio State.

A handful of Youngstown recruits, who were almost in Mountaineer uniforms, followed him to Columbus. Most humorous Chuck Noll quote during the college player draft: When asked about Terry Bradshaw's peanut butter, Noll responded, "I told Terry I bought a jar of peanut butter, and I asked him where do I send the label to get a refund." The mighty heave represented only the third time in history that a United States high school girl has surpassed 50 feet with the four-kilo (8 pound, 13 ounce) shot.

The best put ever was 50 feet 3 inches, set in 1968, while Sobansky produced the other long put, 50 feet inch, during the Penn Relays at Philadelphia earlier this spring. Yesterday's winning effort sewed up Sobansky's third straight state championship in an event in which she also holds the state record with the lighter, eight-pound balL However, her bid to double yesterday with a repeat title in the discus was foiled by Gateway's Jodi Smith, who a week-and-a-half earlier had ended Sobansky's reign as WPIAL discus champion. This time Smith whipped the dish 138 feet 6 inches, while Sobansky placed second with a 137-8 effort. Meanwhile, there was as expected no unseating Candy Young, the hurdler extraordinaire from Beaver Falls. Young repeated in her specialty, the 100-meter hurdles, with a 13.65-second effort that was about one-third of a second slower than her state-meet record time (13.27) set last year.

Kathy Travers of Wilmington was also unstoppable as she won her third straight shot put title and second straight discus crown in the girls Class AA competition. In other Class AA field events, Mary Chrobak of Shenango captured the javelin with a state-record throw of 142 feet 10 inches, and Northgate's Marlene Myers took the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet 2 inches. Peabody brought the City League a taste of gold as the girls 400-meter relay team raced to a first place in the Class AAA competition, while one of the Highlander sprinters, City champ Renee Henderson, was second in the 100-meter dash. Nooo-6 p.m SAT. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. MOH-FRI. 9:30 I New uastie team to the WFlAL championship with a sweep in the sprints, was no better than sixth in the 100-meter event yesterday. Debbie Johnson of Clairton, the WPIAL Class AA meter-100 champion, was more successful, capturing the state crown in 12.42 seconds.

In the boys 100-meter dashes, WPIAL kings Jeff Austin of Penn Hills (AAA) and Ben Harris of Charleroi (AA) both finished second in yesterday's finals. Dwight Collins of Beaver Falls earned the WPIAL a piece of gold in the Class AAA 200-meter dash, which the Pitt-bound three-sport star won handily in 21.34 seconds. Another Class AAA winner from the WPIAL was Uniontown sophomore Terry Jackson, who equalled his season best in the high jump with a gold medal effort of 6 feet 10 inches. There were surprises in both the boys and girls Class AAA 1600-meter runs. Dallas Roper of Fox Chapel, who made a shambles of the event in the WPIAL championship meet, lost a shoe early in yesterday's race and still wound up third, behind Steve Spence of Lower Dauphin and Frank German of Punxsutawney.

Defending girls 1600-meter champion Kim Gallagher of Upper Dublin didn't finish at all. She false-started in the final and was disqualified. "Watch me in the 800," she said following her faux pas. And indeed, Gallagher was good on her promise, breezing to victory in the national record time of 2:05.47. cBmfzt5da emy.
