PORTLAND, Maine (UPI) "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler unleashed a torrent of jabs and hooks a minute into the second round yesterday to knock out African middleweight champion Loucif Hamani. By BILL NAAB Roberta McCallum likely will take a magic carpet ride this summer to the Wimbledon tennis championships on, of all things, a Terrible Towel.

The 21-year-old Mt. Lebanon resident chuckles about the possibility of turning the Steelers' good-luck charm How about the Terrible Towel, will it be among her overseas luggage? "Of course," she chuckled, "maybe it'd do me some good. They probably wouldn't know what the heck it was." But it's doubtful that Roberta McCallum would arrive an unknown. DUOUnE DUKE imo. an international hocus-pocus weapon.

But Berta's expected participation in the famed event in England won't be the result of any abracadabra. There's nothing magical about the hard work that has carried her to among the top 70 professional women tennis players in the world, although some sports writers and tennis observers thought she might have had a whammy going against her opponents recently. "With another win or two, I should have enough Avon points to qualify for the majors all the way through Boston (four weeks from now)," she said.

"But I don't think there's any way I could get into the Avon championships this spring at Madison Square Garden. Because I've missed four (major) tournaments so far, I'd have to make the final four of the remaining ones just to have a chance." The Women's Tennis Association computes tour points and world rankings (through 210) according to such factors as number of sets won and quality of opponents played. Berta, meanwhile, started moving in tennis's numbers racket months before her "discovery" in Los Angeles. It all began right at home. While teaching tennis at Oglebay Park, W.Va., she decided to enter last summer's Colgate Greater Pittsburgh Tournament at the Greentree Racquet Club.

Following three qualifying wins, she entered the main draw and upset No. 3 seed Lele Forood and reached the semifinals before losing to Renee Richards. "That's when I was coaxed into going to Australia to work on improving my rating so that I could start qualifying for the Avon Futures rather than going through the pre-qualifying," said Berta. "Pre-qualifiers have to win as many as seven matches just to get into the Futures." She defeated Barbara Jordan and Sherry Acker, women among the top 60, in advancing to the quarterfinals at Adelaide. "Down Under" actually had a double meaning for Berta as her three-city visit resulted in lowering her ranking to No.

70, and now she figures to continue her countdown. "I'm hoping to be ranked about 30th," the freckled McCallum said. "The first 96-rated women go to Wimbledon, and I think it'd be pretty difficult for me to drop that far before summer. I guess you could say I'm counting on it (Wimbledon)." If she's right, she'll be the first Pittsburgh woman to play there and the first Pittsburgh-area person at Wimbledon since Edgewood's Chuck Garland won the doubles title there in 1920, the same year he also lost to eventual champion Bill Tilden in the singles quarterfinals. Garland was singles runnerup the previous year.

Thus, when she advanced all the way to the quarterfinals at Los Angeles two weeks back in her first major competition in this country, people began to take notice.

Just before that, she won the Avon Futures Tournament in Boise, Idaho, defeating former Pittsburgh Triangle JoAnne Russell en route to qualify for the biggie. (Every week the four finalists from the futures tourney earn entry into the major field for at least a two-week stay.) McCallum turned more heads in LA than movie sensation Bo Derek might, while upsetting 1978 Rookie of the-Year Pam Shriver and stunning lOth-ranked Kathy Jordan of King of Prussia, who beat her for the state girls singles championship four years ago. It took sixth-ranked Wendy Turnbull to block her path. As well as Berta's court skills, the Terrible Towel drrjoped over the back of her chair caught the media's attention. Remember, it hasn't been long since Southern California was last victimized by its powers.

"I'm still carrying the Terrible Towel," laughed Berta. "The Los Angeles press got a kick out of it, but I kept waving it." She cites an improved serve and volley as two of the worldly reasons for her recent success. Her serve now resembles the picture of speed and accuracy, while she no longer is strictly a baseline rally player. She's forcing more points now. "In Los Angeles, I wanted to show myself that I could compete at this level.

And when I beat Kathy Jordan, it felt a lot better. "Against Wendy Turnbull, I wasn't placing my hits well enough, but she was much faster than my other opponents. From about the ninth-ranked player on down, you to make super shots. Those players are in a class by themselves; they're at another level." Although Berta lost to Switzerland's Christianne Jolissaint in a first-round match in Oakland last week, her play in LA will guarantee her a spot on the major tour for at least a few more weeks. "That tournament really has been a big boost to my career," she said.
