'-Bugs Almmosit Break: Badger Dommmn By LESTER BIEDERMAN Pittsburgh Press Staff Writer BROOKLYN, June 21 Al though it isn't reflected in the standings of the teams, the Pirates are looking better for a change. They made the Dodgers go right down to the wire yesterday before losing their ninth straight decision to them, after taking two out of out of the infield. Wilks has lost three games in relief and all by home runs. Dick Groat continued to look mighty impressive He singled to center and was nipped on the left thumb by a pitched ball in four times at bat and in the field even had the Dodgers goggle-eyed. The former Duke star started one double play and was the middle man in another.

Bill Meyer remarked later, "He plays shortstop" like it should be played. He's smooth as silk and has marvelous bine, and presto! Howie Pollet looked like money in the bank as he walked into the eighth inning with a 4-1 lead and a five-hitter. With two out, Bobby Morgan was on second base when things began to hum at Ebbets Field. Pee Wee Reese, hitless until this moment, cracked a line single to right, scoring Morgan. Jackie Rofbinson, also hitless, stroked a drive to centerfield and when it eluded George Metkovich, Reese scored and Robinson was sitting on third base with the tying run.

Wilks relieved Pollet at this thing went black. Shuba, who lives in nearby Youngstown, by the way, had a 1-1 count when he fired his first home run of the season over the right-field fence with Gil Hodges aboard and quickly transformed a 4-3 defeat into a 54 victory. What happened? Well, the base on balls Wilks handed Hodges on a 3-2 serve to open the ninth inning didn't help any. Andy Paf ko sacrificed him to second and after Duke Snider fanned, the 4670 fans had just about given up this one for lost. Shuba swung for Clem La- point and, pitching carefully to Roy Campanella, walked the Dodgers' catcher on a 3-2 count.

Carl Furillo flied out and the danger seemed averted. The explosion was simply delayed until the ninth inning. The Pirates did some heavy cannonading on Ben Wade for their four runs, wasting three safeties before scoring twice in the third inning. Wade walked Pollet and Metkovich and Gus Bell's line single filled the bases with one out in the third. Ralph Kiner popped up, but Joe Garagiola boomed a two-run single into centerfield.

Metkovich singled in the fifth inning and Kiner drilled his 12th homer into the upper left-field seats. A walk to Hodges and Andy Pafko's triple off the center-field wall gave the Dodgers a run in the fifth inning. Forrest Main, who beat the Giants in his first starting assignment Tuesday night, goes against Billy Loes tonight. Tony Bartirome finally broke hi hitless streak and bashed a single to right field in the ninth inning, his first safety in 30 times at bat, during which he put only five balls BROOKLYN, June 21 Diary of a baseball writer who is beginning to find the Pirates less exciting every day up to this point of no return: SUNDAY Philadelphia is bad enough on a Sunday but when the temperature reaches a stifling 91, that is too much.
