The two are thrown together during a two-week cattle drive headed for Santa Fe, New Mexico. A truly he-man picture without the introduction of a single feminine player, the Western tale has practically everything the Western film addict could expect in the way of thrills. Wild horses, cattle stampedes, races and gun fights in the parched desert serve as the background for a heart-warming story of an unusual friendship between a headstrong boy and an understanding man. After a long and successful career as both motion picture star and rancher, McCrea obviously is one of the most at-home-in-the-saddle players on the screens today. Thus he maintains a double-check on his movie wares and the players new or old in them. Years ago the trade publication Motion Picture Herald started the first of its exhibitors poll to determine their choices for the "Stars of Tomorrow." While the movie house operators' predictions were never 100 per cent correct, still down the years more than half their candidates have attained star rating, substantiated by box-office returns. A Bull's Eye! They hit the target last year when they voted Martin Lewis the No. 1 spot. And they certainly were on the beam in choosing William Holden for runner-up.

Results. of the 11th annual "Stars of Tomorrow" poll, released today, put Howard Keel in top place. Two hits, "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Show Boat," turned the trick for the strapping baritone. Thelma Ritter. whose earthy Interpretations in supporting roles tickled the public's fancy, is runner-up.

And she deserves It if for. nothing else than her performance in 'A11 About Eve." In third place is Shelley Winters. Ferrer Trails Matt Cvetic will be pleased to learn that Frank Lovejoy who portrayed him in "I Was A Communist for the F.B.I." world-premiered -here, won fourth place in the "Star of Tomorrow" poll. The other six, in order of their standings, are Debra Paget, David Brian, Piper Laurie, Gene Nelson, Dale Robertson and Corinne Calvet. Academy Awards mean nothing to the hard-bitten exhibitors.

Jose Ferrer, handed an Oscar for his "Cyrano de Bergerac" is No. 16 in the poll. That, to quote, the trade magazine, is his rating "in the plain language of the box office dollar." To Remake Hit Remember 'way back yonder the sensational teaming of Greta Garbo and the late John Gilbert in "Flesh and the Devil," as torrid a slice of cinema as has ever brought a heat wave to the movie houses? Clarence Brown, director of that boxoffice bonanza, told me yesterday shortly after he had planed in from Hollywood to take part in the premiere festivities for his "Angels in the Outfield" that he's going to do a remake. He -plans to pair Ava Gardner and the Latin glamor boy, Ferdinand Lamas in the Garbo-Gilbert roles, and with Ricardo Montalban in a featured role. Mr.

Brown will start the film next summer. It'll be in Technicolor and with Ava and Ferdinand pitching woo, how can it miss? Mr. Brown introduced Gilbert to Garbo and then began one of the warmest off-screen romances in Hollywood history. On screen they weren't just play-acting, either. It's Mr.

Brown's belief that Gilbert died of a "broken heart" of unrequited love for the ethereal Garbo.
