They began as the aristoIt "'Reelin' in the crat of Top.

40 bands with "Do Years," and "Dirty Work" (all from their Can't Buy Thrill debut, named after a Dylan phrase) and swung into high gear with Pretzel Logic, a sophisticated pop record doused with jazz glimmerings. In 1975, Katy Lied proved that they had the chops as well as the inspiration; and last season's The Royal Scam was hailed by jazz critic Michael Cuscuna not only as musically innovative but lyrically scathing. Aja (on ABC) is Steely Dan's sixth episode and again directed by songwriters Don Fagen (synthesizer, vocals) and Walt Becker (bass, guitars). They might be called electric Paul Simons, fusing sizzling, spare lyrics with literally dozens of chord variations and dynamics in the jazz tradition. And like Simon, they manage to make it accessible and even commercial in places.

In the title cut, "Aja," Steely Dan entrance the listener with visions of the eastern world, only to turn around and sneer at the "hipper-than- thou" rock audience--an audience which may include themselves: Chinese music always set me free Angular banjoes sound good to me. Marvelously, the music is just as subtle, until guest SAXophonist Wayne Shorter of Weather Report and drummer Steve Gadd crank out some pulverizing patterns and rhythms as it fades out. Other songs are less than clever, like the near disco of "Black Cow" or the theme of "Josie," a tasty ditty about a community girl in the truest sense of the word. These tunes only echo disco rather than fall victim to it, as is the case with the latest Leo Sayer LP we'll review in early November. Fagen is almost an undistinguished but clear vocalist he tends to punctuate the lyrics in short syllables that tie in with the arrangements nice- Sandy Oaks Tavern Hwy.

In other words, more than the sum of its parts. "Peg," the possible single, is Aja's catchiest and most melodic piece. It's enhanced by keyboardist Paul Griffinwho played on such landmark AM radio hits as "Like a Rolling Stone" and "American Pie" -and Doobie Brother Mike McDonald's supporting vocal. Aja is poppy yet hardly formulized. As is the case with the Beatles'.

white, album or any other well-constructed hunk of wax, Aja changes a bit with each spin. An element that stands out on one listening is dominated later by something else. A lot of current albums have no sense of surprise or mystery; Fagen and Becker continue to use these facets to the hilt. DANCE.
