From 9 a.m. to noon on weekdays, Channel 2 managed an almost invisible 1 percent of SL Louis TV households, plummeting it into fifth behind even Channel 9.

Channel 2 beat only Channel 30 and Channel 24 in that time block and that was only because those stations' audience levels were too low to be measured by the ratings services. The only bright spot for the Times-Mirror-owned outlet was weekdays between noon and 3 p.m., when ABC's improved soap-opera ratings (according to Arbitron, at least) lifted the station into a tie for second place in overall audience. It must be noted here that even its competitors seem shocked and distressed at the continuing fall of Channel 2. Sources at these stations repeatedly refer to the waste of a fine broadcast facility, and they are convinced that the lack of competition hurts the St. Louis television business overall.

The only explanation they can come up with is that Times Mirror must be planning to sell Channel 2, an assertion that has been consistently and forcefully de-nied by the station's local management. Besides, a company looking to sell off a television station would normally want to inflate ratings and revenues, even temporarily, thereby increasing the price for which the station could be sold. Yet the further the ratings sink and the longer they stay that way, the less the station may be worth. The dissipation of Channel 2 remains one of the great mysteries of local broadcasting. Among the independent stations.

Channel 11 made strides in Its weekday prime-time ratings (a strong showing from its repackaged films helped considerably) and in its ratings with young female viewers. And from 3 p.m. weekdays until 6:30. Channel 11 is the No. 3 station overall.

In the 5-7 p.m. time block, traditionally a critical one for independents. Channel rating outdistanced that of Channel 30 by a factor of 6-to-l. May was not a happy time for Channel 30 in most time periods. Its brief flirtation with home shopping the "Dayton-Hudson Direct" noontime hour was a disaster, managing no measurable ratings and producing negligible revenue for Channel 30 from its percentage of the sale of merchandise.

In the 5-7 p.m. weekday time period, Channel 30's ratings were tied with those of Channel 9. the non-commercial television station, not a good sign, to say the least. Channel 30's Fox Broadcasting programming didn't help much. Ratings for "The Late Show" from 10 to 11 m.

weekdays formerly starring Joan Rivers were anemic, and the Fox Sunday-night lineup proved no better at pulling audience shares than the shows Channel 30 had on a year ago. From sign-on to sign-off the ratings for which offer an oversimplified but useful indication of a station's overall competitive health Channel 30 was watched in an average of only 1 percent of the television homes In the area. Sounds like trouble In River City. CHANNEL 5 maintained its dominance in the important May television ratings period, Channel 4 remained a solid No. 2 and Channel 11 made significant progress in several time periods.

Channels 2 and 30, however, continued to trail far behind the pack and appear to be having serious dif-ficulty making any ratings progress: As always, there are some differences between the estimates compiled by the Nielsen ratings service and those done by Arbitron. And, as always, it is essential to keep in mind that ratings success and programming quality may, but do not necessarily, go hand in hand, especially when it comes to local news. It's also worth pointing out that the May ratings period is an especially critical time in the life of local TV stations. The numbers earned during May will be used by the stations to sell advertising from now until the fall, at least for those time periods in which programming doesn't change from season to season (i.e. local news broadcasts).

In other words, an awful lot of money is riding on the May figures. Ratings for Channel 5's evening and nighttime newscasts put it cleanly in first place. At 5 and 6 p.m., Channel 5 increased Its margin over Channel 4, compared with results for February, the previous ratings period. At 10 o'clock, however, the spread remained about the same. Arbitron results suggest that Channel 5's "Wheel of Fortune," the dominant program at 6:30 p.m.

weekdays, added to its already enormous audience, pulling Channel 5's newscasts up In the process. At the same time, both "The New Newlywed Game" on Channel 4 and "Entertainment Tonight" on Channel 2 seem to have peaked, stopping far short of challenging "Wheel." The 10 o'clock news numbers, on the other hand, are often linked to prime-time ratings between 9:30 and 10 p.m. In that time slot, CBS actually outdrew overall winner NBC, which, In turn, gave Channel 4's 10 o'clock numbers a boost. Not enough of a boost, though. According to Arbitron.

CBS 4) had 33 percent of the viewing audience between 9:30 and 10, NBC (Channel 5 had 28 percent and ABC (Channel 2) had 19 percent. Between 10 and 10:30, those positions chunged radically. Channel 5's newscast pulled 34 percent of the audience; Channel 4, 30 percent; and Channel 2, 16 percent. Obviously, many May viewers who were watching CBS (and ABC) between and 10 switched over to Channel 5 at 10. Among female viewers age 25 to 54, a prime target for ndvertisers.

Channel 5 also copped top honors, leading all other stations at 5, 6, 6:30 and 10 o'clock. At 10:30, though, Channel 4's repackaged reruns of "Carol Burnett" bent Channel 2's barely viewable "M'A'S'H" reruns and Channel 5's "Tonight Show" in the race for this important slice of the audience. was the time-period lender in overall audience, however, albeit by a tiny margin.) Channel 2's May ratings performance was dismai, as is becoming Siiilly customary.
