"You have it happen daily to other people," he said.

"You just don't think it will hit home like that" According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the Jokersts were southbound on the interstate about 2 p.m. Friday when a 1989 Ford Taurus driven by Merlin T. Walton of St Louis swerved to avoid stopped traffic, crossed the median and struck the left side of Martin Jokerst's 1996 Ford Taurus. Walton was listed in fair condition Saturday at St Louis University Hospital. A passenger in his car, Lewis D.

Johnson, 44, of St Louis was treated and released from Jefferson Memorial Hospital on Friday. Patrol spokesman Sgt Terry St Clair said it would take two weeks to a month for police to reconstruct the accident to determine the exact cause of the crash. The patrol then will determine whether to seek criminal charges against Walton or cite him for a traffic violation, he said. City Administrator Gary Edwards said City Council members would meet Monday to confirm Councilman Jack King as mayor pro tern until a special election can be held. Edwards said he and his family were shocked by the news.

"We feel like we should be doing something, but we don't know what we should be doing," he said. "We're taking the steps necessary to keep the city going. That what she would have wanted." During her tenure as mayor, Jokerst was instrumental in organizing the Jefferson County Water Authority and initiating development of an $11 million water treatment plant to serve Festus and Herculaneum. She had also worked with officials in Crystal City to build a levee to protect the communities from flooding on the Mississippi River. Hair stylist Carlen SprueL of the Convertible Images salon, said the customers only had one thing on their minds.

"I dont think there's been one person thafs sat in my chair today that didnt want to talk about it," Spinel said. "In a small community like this, when something like this happens, ifs like losing a star." Visitation for the Jokersts will be held noon to 9 p.m. Monday at Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus. Memorial services wiU be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church in Crystal City.
