15 JAN 0 04 2002 END CHANGES DE 84 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH METRO FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, 2002 "END FOR THIS DATE 'ILLINOIS 37 Sale Science Center is selling its unwanted old items Continued from B1 "They have all served their purpose. We have refurbished what we can," said design director Joe Seidler. "We've got to change if we want repeat visitors." So far, the Challenger Learning Center in Kentucky has paid $4,500 for a Tesla coil (a generator that can produce very long sparks), an angular "momentum machine" and other supplies. A Kansas man who hopes to open a theater bought 190 old planetarium chairs for $350.

And St. Louis scavenger and City Museum founder Bob Cassilly is reportedly eyeing other leftovers from Science Park. Crandell has not put a price tag on any of the items. After all, how do you appraise the value of black curtains embedded with fiber-optic lights or spinning tiles that outline the history of radio and television? Officials hope the sale will net more than $10,000. Planetarium chief Johann Galikin may kick in some of his own money to buy the old comet projector.

Years before the planetarium obtained its new $3.5 million Zeiss projector, he would use it to design supernova explosions and flaring comets. The projector was worth maybe $2,000 when it was purchased about 40 years ago. "I've got to bid on it," said Galikin. "It's not worth a lot, but it has a lot of sentimental value."
