ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH METRO FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2001 3fr OCT 1 2 2D01 KDNL After tonight, Channel 30 will end news operatm Continued from Bl Report on student searches will be delayed until Tuesday percent share of the audience and fewer than 50,000 households, half as many as watched "Friends" on KPLR (Channel 11). Networks do not discuss relations with affiliates, but ABC insiders say the network has long been distressed by the performance of its station in St. Louis, the 22nd-largest TV market Network news divisions rely on affiliates for help in reporting regional stories, and also hope for a strong lead-in from a local newscast to boost ratings of national news programs like ABC's "World News Tonight With Peter Jennings." KDNL's poor 5 p.m. ratings carry over to Jennings' newscast, which earned the same 0.3 rating on Wednesday.

Most affiliation contracts require stations to air local news; KDNL's apparently does not. ABC has chosen not to comment on the KDNL situation beyond stating, "We regret their decision," ABC News spokesman Todd Polkes said Thursday. KDNL launched its newscast in January 1995, seven months before becoming an ABC affiliate in a switch with KTVI (Channel 2). News ratings had slumped seriously in the past 18 months, and many observers point to transmission problems as a major cause. A fire in a transmission line in late 1999, coupled with changes to the tower necessitated by the government-mandated conversion to digital broadcasting, forced the station to cut back its power so severely that many viewers without cable complained that they could not receive KDNL at all In the end, KDNL's two half-hour newscasts were widely ignored by St Louis TV viewers.

At 5 p.m. Wednesday, only 1 percent of the television sets in use were tuned to Channel 30; the newscast's 0.3 rating represented fewer than 3,400 St. Louis households. The 10 p.m. newscast drew a 6 announced that he would seek the Republican nomination to run against Sen.

Jean Camahan next year. "Whatever turns up, I'm not leaving St Louis," Edlund said. "My kids are here, and that's where I'll be." Alan said he was moved by an outpouring of sympathy and support from news directors around the country, many of whom offered job leads for KDNL staffers. "But not everybody wants to move, or is able to move," he said. "And the job scene in St Louis TV isnt that good right now." The KDNL layoffs come as TV stations nationwide feel the pinch of a slump in advertising sales.

Belo Corp. warned Wednesday of layoffs and cost-cutting steps at its stations, including KMOV (Channel 4). KSDK (Channel 5) laid off three staffers in May. By Rick pierce Of the Post-Dispatch A report into allegations that a group of sixth-graders were strip-searched by school security guards won't be released until the East St. Louis School Board meets Tuesday, Superintendent Nathaniel Anderson said.

"I want the parents to be reassured that we will take proper action," Anderson said Thursday afternoon. Parents have complained that their children were taken to rest-rooms and asked to strip down to their underwear by security guards trying to find $25 that a student had reported missing. The incident took place at Lans- downe Junior High last week. On Thursday, Anderson provided only sketchy information. He confirmed that the money was recovered, but declined to say whether the students were asked to disrobe.

He said he had interviewed a teacher, the two school security guards believed to be involved and a group of students and parents and would report to the board. He also said that the two guards one male and one female will not be working until the investigation is over. He declined to name them. Asked if the two had been suspended without pay, Anderson said the guards don't get paid for days they don't work. some reporters were stili "agoniz-t ing over their stories, trying to them the best they could t-be." 1 Edlund, who spent 13 years at KSDK (Channel 5) before signing on with KDNL a year ago, plans to get out of TV news and says he is weighing his options. Leaving is "harder than I thought it would be," Edlund said. "This business does get into your blood. And I enjoyed anchoring with Gina so much. Given a chance, we could have done some damage." During his hiatus before joining KDNL, Edlund worked for then-Rep.
