THE James H. McTague (1858-1926) was a Morris, III., native who came to downtown St. Louis and became one of the Midwest's most popular restaurateurs. He ran McTague's Restaurant in the bottom of the Century Building from 1904 to 1926. Upstairs was the Century Theater. Accounts say that some of the Vaudeville performers who would dine at McTague's after their shows included Burns and Allen, Ed Wynn, Fred Allen and Al Jolson. Baseball patrons included Charles Comiskey (with whom McTague played college ball ) John McGraw and Babe Ruth. McTague family history claims that the "Mc" in McTague inspired the term and dish called chili mac. ST.
