Von Bulow is denied new trial City of Galveston and Galveston County will be helping the EL MINA SHRINE collecting for the Shrine Hospitals NEWPORT, R.I.

(AP) A judge on Friday rejected Claus von Bulow's bid for a new trial, saying evidence against the wealthy socialite justified his conviction on charges of twice trying to kill his heiress wife. Superior Court Judge Thomas H. Needham increased von Bulow's bail from $100,000 to $500,000, and von Bulow's lawyers said the $50,000 required to secure his immediate freedom was posted in the form of five certificates of deposit. Needham said sentencing wil! take place May 7. Von Bulow could be sentenced to up to 40 years in prison on the two counts of attempted murder.

The judge said his decision rested heavily uncontradicted medical idence that Martha "Sunny" von Bulow was pushed into two comas, the second" a lasting one, by injections of insulin. Von Bulow listened silently as defense and prosecution lawyers made brief oral arguments. Defense attorney Herald P. Fahringer asked Needham to set aside the conviction returned March 16 because von Bulow was found guilty on only ''the sheerist of circumstantial evidence." Fahringer contended the state never refuted medical testimony that drug or alcohol abuse could have been contributing factors in Mrs. von Bulow's comas.

Deficits blamed for auto slump WASHINGTON (AP) The president of Ford Motor Co. said Friday that huge federal deficits will prevent the auto industry from experiencing "meaningful recovery." "We have to do something to get the overall spending of government under control," Ford President Donald E. Petersen said.

Petersen blamed the federal budget deficits, expected to be at least $100 billion in fiscal 1983 and possibly much higher, for continuing high interest rates. He said he foresees no lowering of those rates unless the deficit is reduced. "I don't see any recovery until there is at least anticipation of a decline in interest rates," Petersen said. "If we indeed face the magnitude of deficits as I read about, we're heading for a terrible, terrible period of time ahead of us."
