14:30 A DU.UUU. NCarolina Bears Don't Let Win Go To Their Heads By Ken Roberts Special to the Post-Dispatch The last thing Washington University football coach Larry Kindbom wanted his players to do Saturday was get ahead of themselves. "We didn't want our guys writing an early script (on how they wanted the season to play out)," Kindbom said. "At the beginning of camp this year, we asked everybody to check their egos at the door." 1 knt 06-21-1 25 4-40 0 0-0 7-67 11-20-0 49 2-46 5 2-1 4-44 Time of Poss. 36 33 23:27 INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING Oregon St King 19-91.

The win, the Bears' ninth in a row at home and sixth in succession overall, upped their record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the UAA, while Case fell to 1-1, 1-1. Though the Bears offense scored 24 points, it was the defense, led by linebackers Jeremy Bellinghausen, Brad Klein and Jacob Parent that kept the Spartan in check for EAST Army 35. Bellinghausen (13 tackles), Klein (11) and Parent (10) combined for 34 tackles. "We have the kind of defense that's based on guys who can run and get to the football," Kindbom said. "I feel good with the guys we have in there." Until Case scored with 4 minutes 25 seconds left in the game, the Bears defense had held their opponents scoreless for 235 minutes 37 seconds or 15-plus quarters going back to last season. In fact, the last team to score against the Bears, was Case, when it scored with two seconds remaining in their game last season. "I thought overall our defense stepped up and played a great game," Klein said.

"The defensive line was getting penetration. A lot of those holes I was getting into were opened up by the linemen and I was getting a free shot in there at the quarterback." The Spartan rushing game was almost nonexistent as Case gained only 51 yards. Ted Otero rushed for 78 yards on 23 carries. Washington offensive thrusts were led by quarterback Thor Larsen and wide receiver Vernon Butler. Larsen, who became the Bears' all-time leader in total offense when he hit Butler with a 27-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, was 17 of 31 for 208 yards.

Larsen also ran for his first collegiate touchdown, a 9-yard run with 8:25 to go in the game. Larsen, a 6-foot, 199-pound junior from Nevada City, has 4,194 total yards. He broke the old record of 4,083 held by quarterback Aaron Keen, the Bears linebackers coach. Butler, a wide receiver who had eight catches for 93 yards, scored the first of his two touchdowns on the second play of the game. Just 25 seconds into the game, Butler took a handoff from Larsen, turned the corner and went down the right sideline to score on a 60-yard end around.

Butler then caught Larsen's TD pass with 5:03 to go in the first half. TOP 25 Florida 14 21 0 035 Tennessee 0 6 10 1329 Tex M.Adams 3 pass from J.Brown (Dawson kick, 3 jb. NO FG Sanson 20. 9:33. Tex P.Holmes 3 run (Dawson kick).

Phil Shellhaas scored on a 1-yard keeper, then found Cornell Craig for a 5-yard TD pass to take control. SIUC outscored the visiting Rams 17-0 in the third quarter to gain a 31-6 lead. The Salukis had 400 yards in total offense. Winston-Salem had 241. SMSU 39, Tennessee-Martin 7: Michael Cosey scored on two short runs in the third quarter to break open a close game and lead Southwest Missouri State to victory on the road.

The Bears, ranked 10th in Division I-AA, held their foe to minus-14 yards rushing and 145 net yards. Southwest ran for 296 yards and amassed 425 total yards. Cosey scored on a 1-yard run with 5 minutes 40 seconds remaining in the period to give SMSU a 20-7 lead, then scored on a 2-yard run 1:24 later as Southwest took command. He finished with 160 yards in 32 carries. Wayne Boyer (McCluer North High) kicked field goals of 24, 19, 48 and 25 yards in helping Southwest improve to 3-1.
