V- -v- a (5? 4C ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 1996 POLICECOURTS Fr Art's Salce 20, of Pagedale, was charged last Harden, month. The following incidents were among those that were reported to police departments in the St. Louis metropolitan area or that involved action in one of the area's courts: COURT ACTIONS Museum Doesn't See Suit Over Vandalism As A War 'i b. nJf it ri i i ii i St.

Louis: John Richard White, 39, of St. Peters pleaded guilty Thursday of using the Internet to distribute child pornography. White used his computer to send to Landover, an image of a girl under the age of 1 8 in sexual contact with an older man. White could get about two years in prison when he is sentenced Oct. 25 by Senior U.S.

District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh. DRIVING OFFENSES South County: George Mersinger, 35, of the 7900 block of Navajoe Street, was charged Thursday with involuntary manslaughter and driving while intoxicated in an accident on March 16 that killed Lawrence Gill. The accident happened in the 10000 block of Kennerly Road. Mersinger could face seven years in prison.

FRAUD CASES By Robert W. Duffy Cultural News Editor of the Post-Dispatch Although the St. Louis Art Museum's $2.5 million suit against the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York might suggest culture war, the cannon are quiet, at least for now. On Tuesday, the St. Louis museum sued the Whitney and its security serviees for damage done in 1993 to "Curtains," an oil-and-acrylic work by the pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.

The painting had been valued at between $1.5 million and $2 million before the vandalism. It was lent to the Whitney three years ago for an exhibition called "Hand-Painted Pop: The formative years, 1955-1962." While the painting was on show, a security guard used a felt tip pen to write, "I love you Tushee, Love, Buns." He also drew a heart that surrounded this sentiment: "Reggie Crystal 12691." The guard, Reginald Walker of Brooklyn, was 21 at the time. John Rasp, a lawyer representing the St. Louis museum, said the suit is not actually directed at the Whitney but was filed "to maintain our position against" the St. Paul Fire Marine Insurance Co.

Rasp would not comment on the current value of the painting. The suit seeks at least $500,000 from the Whitney and at least $500,000 from R.S.R. Security Services of Long Island City. It also seeks from Walker at least $500,000 in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages. After the vandalism, museum assistant director Sid Goldstein said the Whitney Museum had assured the St.

Louis museum that the damage could be repaired easily. Paul Haner, the museum's paintings conservator, went to New York and found the damage much greater than originally described. He recommended that it be returned to St. Louis for restoration. The painting was examined by the artist, as well as other experts on 20th century art and art conservation.

Goldstein said the damage was especially bad because the ink had stained the fiber of the canvas. Because the artist applied paint thinly on the canvas, some areas of unpainted canvas are exposed. The painting was given to the St. Louis museum by the late Joseph Pulitzer Jr. and his wife, Emily Rauh Pulitzer, in 1985.

Lichtenstein is one of the 20th century's most celebrated artists. Early in his career, he was associated with the abstract VIOLENT DEATHS Charleston, When officers arrived at the scene of a car wreck Tuesday in Charleston, they found the driver had been fatally shot. He was identified Wednesday as Rodney Wade, 24, of Mounds, III. Wade was shot numerous times in the legs, back and stomach. Wade has relatives in the area.

Police have no suspects. St. Louis: A man, 63, was fatally stabbed Thursday afternoon in a quarrel with a neighbor outside their apartment building in the 2600 block of Ann Avenue, at Jefferson Avenue. The neighbor, a woman, 44, was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder. The victim's name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.

Police said the victim, the suspect and her mother were drinking about 2 p.m. when the two women began quarreling. The quarrel became heated and the victim tried to stop it by striking the suspect with a bottle of wine. The woman then went upstairs and returned with a butcher knife. The man struck her again with the wine bottle as she stabbed him in the chest.

She stabbed him again, in the back, as he fell. When police arrived, the suspect still had the knife and was hostile, so she was sprayed with Mace. ASSAULTS Hazelwood: Jeremy D. Merritt, 20, of the 700 block of Teson Drive in Hazelwood, and Daniel G. Grasshof, 19, of the 200 block of Clearview Drive in Bel-Nor, were charged Thursday in the critical stabbing and beating of a 58-year-old man.

Merritt and Grasshof are charged with going to the home of the man, an aquaintance of Merritt, about 9 p.m. Wednesday to steal money. The man, whom police did not identify, was stabbed more than 20 times. Merritt told police that the victim had made sexual advances toward him. The victim is in critical condition at St.

John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. Pagedale: Gregory N. Mays, 17, of the 10300 block of Castlepoint Avenue, and Anthony Price, 20, of the 2000 block of Sun Valley Drive, Jennings, were charged Thursday with assault and armed criminal action. The two are accused of shooting two people in a car on July 15 in the 1800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in Pagedale. A third man, Percy A.

Creve Coeur: Three people were accused Thursday of using counterfeit Visa cards to get thousands of dollars in cash advances at banks. Charged in federal complaints are Harold G. Wise, 31, of Hollywood, Keely St. James, 36, of Marysville, and Lenae McCorkendale, 30, of Los Angeles. The complaints, filed in U.S.

District Court, say St. James went to two banks in Creve Coeur on Wednesday and used a counterfeit card to get one cash advance of $3,000 and another of $4,000. Creve Coeur police arrested St. James in an office building after she left one of the banks. Wise, who apparently had been traveling with St.

James, was arrested nearby. McCorkendale is accused of fraudulently getting cash advances totaling $7,000 at two Commerce banks in Florissant on Wednesday. MISCELLANEOUS Clayton: Approximately 600 people were evacuated from the St. Louis County courthouse Thursday afternoon because of a bogus bomb threat. Judges, clerks, deputies and visitors poured out of the courthouse about 1:45 p.m.

and returned at 3:21 p.m. Radio station KMOX got a call at 1:30 p.m. that a bomb was set to go off in the courthouse 45 minutes later. A second call announcing the same thing was made two minutes later to county police. Officials ordered the alarm sounded and the building evacuated.

The painting had been valued at more than $1.5 million. expressionists but then became one of the pioneers of the pop art movement of the 1960s. He was especially famous for his paintings based on panels from comic books.

His work was the subject of a special exhibition at the St. Louis Art Museum in 1981 called "Lichtenstein 1970-1980." On Wednesday, Goldstein said the museum hopes the matter will be settled "quickly and amicably." Reuters News Service provided some information for this story.
