6F ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1993 REVIEW FILM HINTS FROM HELOISE Spielberg's Story Of Holocaust Is Triumph a silent witness to the red coat, crimes. Dear Heloise: I am recently married, and one of the gifts I received was a slow-cooker pot. I have to recommend one of these for anyone who has a busy schedule. Since my husband and I both work, coming home and cooking can get very tiresome very quickly.

I use the pot to cook a meal a couple of times a week. Boy, is this wonderful! I come home and dinner is all ready! Cleanup is easy too because there is only one pot to clean. Hooray! Slow cookers are a great time-and energy-saver! Did you know that eight hours of slow cooking in an electric pot only costs about 6 cents! Don't lift the lid off of the pot while cooking because every time you do, you may have to add up to 20 minutes to the cooking time. Another helpful reminder is to fill the pot all the way up because smaller amounts of food may dry too much during the cooking process. Good luck! Dear Heloise: A slice of apple in dried pitted dates will soften them just like it does hard brown sugar.

thing is based on fact but still terms his book a novel. The film is long, but mesmerizing in every respect, and in an unforgettable epilogue, set at Schindler's grave in Jerusalem, the remaining Schindler Jews, escorted by the actors who portrayed them in the film, step forward to place symbolic stones at his tombstone. Spielberg has created his masterpiece. (Kenrick) fortune. He moved from Austria to Poland in the fall of 1939 and took advantage of German regulations to buy a factory that had been owned by Jews.

He bought it cheaply, but he also had Jewish investors, assuring the original owners a return on their property. Schindler had no interest in charity or kindness, but as the screws tightened on the Jewish population of Krakow, his stomach began to turn, and he used all his con-man skills, plus cash bribery, drink, women, gambling and any other available tactic to Schindler actually saw her, first on one street, then another, and she was the key that unlocked his feelings. Embeth Davidtz is wonderful as a Jewish woman who was Goeth's housemaid, and Jonathan Sagalle is strong as Poldek Pfefferbrg (later Leo Page), who worked with Schindler and who later was the inspiration for Keneally's novel. Interestingly, Keneally writes that every "SCHINDLER'S LIST" Rating: violence, nudity, language. Running time: 3:05.

There are no childhood dreams, elements or special-effects wizardry in "Schindler's List." It is a spare, searing story of the banality of "evil and the strange heroes who rose to 'fight against it. In this case, the hero is Oskar Schindler, an Austrian Catholic businessman a drinker, a womanizer, a man with no apparent I VI Wit 2Ttf mm 'chindler managed to mm LOOK FOR THE RED TAGS TAKE AN ADDITIONAL no compromise the German military establishment. Schindler's Jews worked long hours, but there were no beatings, and the food was better.

Eventually, he built his own camp, adjacent to the factory, and by 1944, he moved more than 1,000 Jews to a new location in Czechoslovakia, where they made defective ammunition until the war ended. Schindler, bluffing and cajoling every step of the way, eventually paid the German Army for all "his" Jews, and when be went bankrupt after the war, their children supported him until his death, in 1974. As usual, truth is stranger than fiction. Spielberg brought together a large and international cast, and shooting in Krakow, where so may Jews were murdered, made effective performances even easier, it appears. Liam Neeson is a splendid Schindler, tall, handsome, devil-may-care and a poker-playing genius.

Ben Kingsley, as Itzhak Stern, Schindler's accountant and chief aide, is as brilliant as ever, and Ralph Fiennes is evil and powerful as Amon Goeth, a concentration camp commander who would coolly shoot Jews with his sniper's rifle while he enjoyed morning coffee on his front porch. Goeth killed at random, but he was the man with whom Schindler had to deal, and the verbal sparring matches between Neeson and Fiennes are chilling. The Nazi evil is almost unspeakable, and Spielberg's dispassionate approach to the horror emphasizes it. Random killings and beatings, casual executions approach the mind-bending. The massacre of the ghetto, as Schindler and his mistress watch from the top of a nearby hill, is what turned him into a zealous savior.

During the savagery, Spielberg focuses from time to time on a small girl in a Or produce faulty ammunition for the German Army. interest except in making money who Saved more than a thousand Jews j- from the concentration camp ovens. Working in black and white, iexcept for an opening, a moving epilogue and a few stomach-turning vi- sions of a red coat, Spielberg has given his triumph the look of a documentary. In addition, he has shot in a 1930s style, using mostly three-quar- ter views of faces and a glorious use -of shadow to create both light and "emphasis. Janus Kaminski, director of pho- tography, rates major kudos for his work, much of which was done with hand-held cameras. Steven Zaillian, who wrote "Awakenings" and wrote and directed "Searching for Bobby Fischer," did the screenplay, based on Thomas Keneally's book.
