ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 3B MONDAY, MAY 6, 1996 REVIEWS eniorNet Guitar Society Ends Its Season With Verve Group Gathering Here Hopes To Get Older Adults 'On Line' MUSIC By Ralph Dummit Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Computer-savvy older adults will converge on St. Louis this week for the 10th anniversary conference of SeniorNet, an organization that teaches computer technology to those 55 or older. Members will meet Wednesday through Saturday at the Regal Riverfront Hotel, older adults "gives them the self-realization that 'I can do it, I can still The keynote speaker Saturday morning will be Nicholas Negro- ponte, founder and director of the Media Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and author of "Being Digital." The international organization' has its headquarters in San' Two works, written by Hill and Wiltschinsky, showed that the performers had internalized (as composers) much of the elegance and gracious melodic flair that characterizes the music they champion as performers. Wiltschinsky's "Prelude and Jota" suggests that he thinks more with a sense of distinctive melody and texture than Hill, whose work, "Tre Esercizi," is very virtuosic, conceived through the fingers.

Both pieces made an agreeable impression. The two players are charismatic, work well together and play with polished professionalism. On rare occasions, some of the faster tempos seemed ambitious (as in the first of Guiliani's "Polonesi Concertanti), and their tangos could use a smuttier edge. But these are minor quibbles about a very fine ensemble indeed. Saturday's concert was the last of the season for the Guitar Society.

By Philip Kennicott Music Critic of the Post-Dispatch No need to go diving for unnecessary profundities in the concert presented by the guitar duo Hill and Wiltschinsky on Saturday night. Their program at the Ethical Society, presented by the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society, was a string of charming crowd pleasers. The English duo, making a second appearance in the United States, presented an evening of diverse and diverting music. Virtuosity was the unifying thread, tying together Elizabethan lute works and Brazilian tangos, with a nod to contemporary styles, and Italian bel canto thrown in.

Four Elizabethan lute duets opened the program, revealing the duo's sharp trills and skillful way with the music's incremental rhythmic elaboration, its progression by steps from simplicity to great ornamental complexity. Works by Fernando Carulli, Mauro Guiliani and Fernando Sor explore guitar music at the juncture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Carulli's Largo and Rondo had moments of Haydn and Rossini; it is a work of high spirits, the. first part testing the players' ability to create the illusion of a vocal line, the second an insouciant romp. The three-movement work by Sor Introduction, Theme and Variations, and Waltz was a series of charming, four-square diatonic pleasantries.

The variations tested and confirmed Robin Hill's remarkable manual dexterity. A transcription of one of Mendelssohn's "Lieder ohne Worte" (Op. 62, No. 1), was impressive for its vocal illusionism. Curious though: Why is it that when instrumentalists imitate singers, they imitate one of their worst habits the upward slide? 200 South Fourth Street downtown.

Portions of the conference be featured on SeniorNet's web site at http:www.seniornet.org. is Gateway SeniorNet chapter is hosting the event. The opening session, from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, is open to the public.

Carl Van Dyke, executive director of the St. Louis chapter, said SeniorNet "has opened a window to the world." The reasons for joining vary, he said. "Some people want to keep up with their children and grandchildren. "Others want to volunteer to help their favorite charity but realize they can't do a thing without computer skills," he said. Perhaps most important, he said, is that computer training for Nathalie LeVine and Patricia Creek, delved into more contemporary material than usual.

At the St. Louis Art Museum Saturday afternoon, Creek's bright, high-energy "Oh, Sousana" put the dancers in red, band uniform jackets, tall hats and white tutus for rousing Sousa marches, led by Tracey Lewis and Danny Clark. Diana Deaver, Michelle Wentworth and Ian Alexander Archer danced a sprightly if not perfected "Pas de Trois" from "Swan Lake, Act In two other works, Creek created a serene abstract ballet, "Shadowed Dreams," to Chopin's piano music and paid tribute to her mother in "Growing Up," featuring projected photos of herself and her mother. Also on the program, modern dancer Sherry Londe presented the deceptively simple "Internal Rhythms" for the apprentice and junior company members who spoke, acted and danced, often to silence. By Regina Popper Of the Post-Dispatch Staff A dance-packed weekend offered the Ballet Conservatory Company's spring concert and the performance of a collaborative modern dance project called "Dance Detour." Mary Ann Rund serves as spokeswoman and chief organizer for Dance Detour's 10 independent dancers and choreographers, who came together for an informal sharing of their works at the Olin dance studio at Washington University.

The Saturday night event showcased several very worthy choreographic talents. The most successful piece of the evening was Rund's "Thunderpulse," which used five women and one man along with the American Indian-inspired music of Scott Fitzgerald to explore the driving energy of hunter vs. hunted. Other show-stoppers were Rund's "Spilled," in which she liter- ally and psychologically bears the weight of her partner, danced by David Marchant, an artist-in-residence at Washington University. Also deserving kudos are Stefanie Silverman for an intriguing look at her Jewish roots in "Deep Fried Potatoes," Lori Roof Racine for "Ink Blots and Passages," also with American Indian-inspired themes, and Sandy Pylipow's "Women With Balls" using medium-sized and gigantic beach balls.

The other pieces had some fine moments but too often resorted to dance-class moves or movement that wasn't guided by a solid dance idea. Also dancing andor choreographing were Jennifer Gross, Rachel Hartmann, Vivia McCutcheon, Judy Silber and Stuart Tsubota. Also, there is a lunch room. A computer lab next to Mrs. Riechmann's fourth-grade class, where Kate sits in the front of the room, is fully stocked.

There is space enough for experiments, such as the one her class performed recently to show how weather systems form. The students haven't studied floods yet, but Kate said she thinks some of her classmates may be familiar with that topic. "We already know they can destroy a lot of stuff," she said. Classes have been held at the new school since the beginning of April. At the dedication ceremony Sunday, many of those seated on folding FUNERAL NOTICE From page one served as classrooms since 1993 for most of the 410 students who attend the new school.

To 10-year-old Kate Brandt, who has now spent most of her academic career in cramped temporary classrooms, the new school is a place of wonder that defies easy explanation. "It's really neat," she said. Kate wrinkled her freckled nose when asked to describe the differences. There is a gym now, she said. Debbie Bohnert, the driver, was following her husband's car when the rain-swollen creek stalled the van and swept it about a mile downstream. The first car made it across safely.

Debbie Bohnert was able to swim away from the van before it came to rest on its side. Her son also was able to get out of the van, and he was rescued by a nearby resident. Debbie Bohnert, in an attempt to save her son, broke her leg when she tried to run and pull him from the water. Authorities said Sunday night they did not have much hope that they would find Ernest Bohnert alive. He suffers from emphysema.

Rescuers found his oxygen tank about 500 yards from where the van came to rest. "The water was really, really running," Crump said. "It was moving at 10 to 15 miles per hour, and some trees were coming down there that were three feet wide. It doesn't take much for these creeks to flood." Mike Basler, the fire chief in nearby Bloomsdale, said, Ernest Bohnert "was in bad health, and I just don't expect to find him." About 75 volunteers helped in the search until just after dark.
