Par 71 First Round Team Scores Class, Position: Junior pitcher. Facts and Figures: It was Stremsterfer's pitching that got Parkway South to the Missouri Class 4A championship game Saturday, but it was her bat that helped win the game. The game was tied 3-3 with two outs in the sixth inning when Stremsterfer painted the right-field line with a hit that scored two runs. The ball rolled under the outfield fence, and Stremsterfer was awarded a ground-rule double. The top-ranked Patriots (25-4) held on for a 5-4 victory over Hannibal.

Comments: "That's just the way the game went," said coach Fred McConnell. "It was a big break for -us to get trie key hit by Erin, and that was a big break for them that it went out of the park. Having her up there to bat, what a situation. She's money in the bank." N.Y., 6:30 Parkway South's Erin Stremsterfer made two key plays in the game to help the Patriots to their third state championship under McConnell in his 17-year coaching career. In the sixth inning, Stremsterfer was batting with the bases loaded, two out and the game tied 3-3.

She responded with a shot down the right-field line that appeared to be an inside-the-park grand slam. But the ball rolled under the fence in the outfield, and Stremsterfer was awarded a ground-rule double. The extra-base hit gave the Patriots a 5-3 lead, but they had to play solid defense to preserve the win. Hannibal had a runner at first base with two out in the last inning, and Amy Graham followed with a hit to right. The ball was played by Andrea Wirkus, whose throw to third base was wild.

Stremsterfer, who was pitching, backed up third base and faked a throw home, allowing the lead runner to score. She then fired to Patriots' second baseman Beth Blackburn, who put the tag on an over-aggressive Graham. "That's a whole-team play," McConnell said. "Erin's in the right spot, backing up the throw, and we were covering second p.m. Minnesota at Portland, 9 p.m.

On The Rebound: Francis Howell coach Morris Johnson was proud of his team after it recovered from Friday's Class 4A semifinal loss to win on Saturday in the third-place game. Francis Howell (18-9) gave up five unearned runs, including four in the fifth inning, in a 5-1 loss to Hannibal on Friday.

On -Saturday, Francis Howell got homers from Dawn Cameron and Jen Wiechens in a 9-3 win over Willard. "It was exciting for us," Johnson said. "Obviously, not as exciting as playing in the championship game. We've relied on our defense all season, but it didn't come through for us on Friday. We came back and talked about it after the game.

We just let our guard down when it was a 1-0 ballgame. But we had to make a comeback to get ready for Saturday's game, and I thought we did a good job." After losing 2-0 to ninth-ranked Fox in a Class 4A sectional game last week, Hazelwood Central pitcher Tracy Rem-specher threw back-to-back perfect games, according to Missouri High School Activities Association rules. The Hawks (21-4) played two makeup games last week, defeating McCluer 1 1-0 in six innings and Riverview Gardens 20-0 in three innings. For the season, Remspecher struck out 162 batters and walked just two. Southwest Missouri 3, Bradley 0 hanon and Dwayne Henry, pitchers; Ron Tingley.

When a country club parking lot is filled with minivans with painted windows reading "Go Cats 1," and "Good luck Bulldogs," chances are that the Missouri State High School Activities Association girls golf championship is in town. And it was.

After the first day of competition at the par-71 Columbia Golf and Country Club course, Visitation Academy led the team standings with a 364, followed by St. Joseph's Academy (374), Sedalia-Smith Cotton (379) and Columbia-Hickman (380). Visitation senior Julie Sabo posted an 80. "It's really tough to start that way, but I just told myself hang in there, there's a lot more holes to go," Rosen said. "I thought 80 would be a really good score." Rosen finished eighth in the girls championship as a freshman but hasn't competed in the girls championship since then.

Interest in girls golf at Greenwood waned, and Rosen spent the past two years playing with the boys team. But Rosen hasn't been totally absent from the girls golf scene, having played in the U.S. Golf Association Girls Junior Championship the past two years. Can anyone match Rosen's 78 in today's final round? "I could," Parkway West freshman Cindy Marlin said. "On the front nine." (CU: Jason i-rank 1.

Hockey is in. But Keenan, who owned this town six months ago, spent the summer backing over many of his supporters. He dealt two fan favorites for out-of-shape newcomers. Opened with a dozen new regulars. Held training camp out of town or at a closed local rink.

On opening night, chatter in one luxury box ran like this: "Who's Number 12? Who's Number Who's Number 28?" Keenan grumped that the boobirds don't even know these players yet. Exactly. Whose fault is that? Empty seats should hurt more. Those who boo still care. Absenteeism equals apathy.

Even with a winner, the bandwagon might not reboard until Christmas, when pro football is over and college kids come home. Then the Blues can only pray that the NHL decides how to conduct play. Hull was driven to fisticuffs he's sending the video of that rare hand-slap-a-thon to his dad because he's frustrated. New rules are killing the game. And him.

"The refs are calling obstruction," Hull said, "so nobody hooks you and hangs on anymore. Now they hit you real quick with the stick to slow you down." As Keenan said, "He's got welts all over his body." So do Blues fans.
