Steel Import Levels Rising PITTSBURGH (UPI) Imported steel shipments jumped in April to the highest level in five months due to a sharp rise in Third World imports, the American Iron and Steel Institute says. But U.S.

steel production continued to climb in April, with output exceeding the yearago level for the first time in 1983, the Washington-based trade association said Tuesday. Foreign steelmakers imported million on tons to the United States in April; capturing 18.3 percent of the domestic market, the group said. The previous high was 1.258 million tons last November, which accounted for 24 percent of the U.S. market, the group said. The April increase came as Korea, Taiwan, South Africa, Brazil and several other nations boosted imports to 466,000 tons from 372,000 tons in March and 215,000 tons last April, the AISI said.

Imports from the European Economic Community rose to 253,000 tons in April from 233,000 in March. But shipments from Japan fell to 256,000 tons from 280,000 tons, while Canadian imports slid to 207,000 tons from 228,000 tons. In March, total shipments of imported steel came to 1.113 million tons, claiming 15.9 percent of the domestic market. Last April, 1.029 million tons of foreign steel the lowest tonnage in 'all of 1982 took a 16.2 percent share. Imports captured 22.3 percent of the depressed U.S.

steel market in 1982, an alltime annual record. Domestic steel production in April totaled 7.292 million tons, as mills ran at 58.9 percent of their maximum rate, the trade group said. It was the first time this year monthly, production stood above same month a year ago. Last April, steelmakers ran at. 55.2 percent capability to produce 7.006 million tons of steel.
