5 NO V2 91935 WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1995 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH f3A Winner Execution 1. 1 Huellewig was unsure of how she would invest her money, but she's already retained an attorney and accountant to help her. That's wise, says John Denando, the chairman of the St. Louis chapter of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners, "Most people don't have the financial literacy to handle this," he said in a phone interview.

He advised that anyone who comes into such a windfall should plan first for his or her estate. "Estate taxes are very steep," ranging from 34 percent to about 60 percent for anything over $600,000 that is left to heirs. The next step is to identify goals and how to meet them. When told that Huellewig planned to be conservative, Denando suggested she put most of her money in tax-free municipal bonds. Even with the relatively low interest that those generate, she will be getting at least $60,000 in interest in her first year as a millionaire.

Denando said she also may want to set up trust funds for her family. While Huellewig said she planned on doing her best to enjoy her wealth, she admitted, "I'll probably have an ulcer over this." LaRette's latest appeal. LaRette claimed he had ineffective legal help during his trial and that because of mental illness caused by head injuries, he couldn't form the intent necessary to commit capital murder. Nixon said those points had all been rejected in prior appeals. Fleming's throat was slashed after she interrupted a burglary in her apartment in St.

Charles. Stabbed twice in the chest and left for dead, she staggered to a neighbor's porch and bled to death. "Every night, every day, I think about Mary," said her brother, Brian Fleming, 40. He recalled talking with Mary on the phone about an hour before the fatal stabbing. They were supposed to spend an afternoon at a park in St.

Charles, Fleming said. He called again because he needed to remind her of something. "The line was busy," said Fleming, a carpenter who lives in Warrenton. "I called again a few minutes later, and a police officer answered." Flem- ing was the first in his family to hear the news. "I've been waiting for (the execution) ever since this man killed dy, who filed the charge, later turned the case over to the state attorney general to avoid any conflict.

Kennedy said he sometimes appeared in the court of Judge Paul Miller, husband of the victim. Former Kansas Attorney General Bob Stephan dropped the charge in 1989, citing the cost of extraditing and prosecuting LaRette and the emotional effect of a trial on Tracey Miller's survivors. LaRette was also accused but never tried in the 1976 murder of Jean-ette Wade in Marathon, the Missouri attorney general's office said. The office said neither Kansas nor Florida sought LaRette's extradition because he was on death row in Missouri. On death row for 14 years, LaRette was to receive a deadly dose of chemicals at one minute past midnight.

The U.S. Supreme Court denied LaRette's application for a stay of execution Tuesday night, said Ed Turner, a spokesman for the court. There were no dissenting votes. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had lifted a stay of execution earlier Tuesday after rejecting From page one bers from Saturday's drawing.

"I retired Monday," she said with a laugh. Although Huellewig says she always knew she'd win the jackpot someday, she seemed at a loss Tuesday to say what she would do with her riches. No exotic travels or extravagant shopping sprees are in the works. She's unsure whether she will move up from the small ranch home she owns in Harvester. The financial security of her family is her top priority.

Huellewig is divorced and has two adult daughters. Five other relatives appeared with her at the press conference, but she said none of them would be quitting their jobs and living off her winnings. The only sign, so far, that she had splurged at all was the 28-foot Lincoln limo in which she and her family rode to the press conference. "I think money can buy security, but not happiness," she said. If she gives money to charity, it will go for the homeless, "the biggest concern we all should have." From page one three unsolved murders in that state and was interviewed about other cases just three weeks ago.

LaRette also offered details about slayings in Texas, Illinois, Colorado, Nebraska, Virginia, Louisiana and a rape and near-fatal beating in Arkansas, Lee said. In cases with adequate detail, local law enforcement agencies were notified. But most cases "were just cold, and there was nothing they could do to investigate," Lee said. LaRette talked less in recent years after investigators he didn't know began contacting him, Lee said. Lee said LaRette first called him from Jefferson City Correctional Center, former home of Missouri's death row, "to say he wanted to confess to a murder" in Manhattan, Kan.

The confession led to LaRette being charged with rape and murder in Riley County, for the stabbing death of Tracey Miller, 26, wife of a local judge. Riley County Attorney Bill Kenne Anthony Joe LaRette 1981 photo my baby sister," Fleming said. "I've been waiting for him to sweat blood. I don't mean to sound so bad, but this is long overdue." His sister Susie Jacoby, 35, of St. Charles agreed.

"I am thanking God that finally he is getting his punishment," she said. The victim's parents are deceased. Kristina Sauerwein of the Post-Dispatch staff contributed information to this story. rp ri WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) Boldin, 24, delivered a son on Thanksgiv- appearance.
