Missouri, which lost by a point to eventual champion UCLA in the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament last spring, has most of that team intact but didn't make the top 10. Mizzou was ranked 14th. Kentucky, which reached the round of eight in last year's NCAA Tournament and returns three starters, received 34 first-place votes and 1,550 points from the national media panel. Kansas was just two points behind after receiving 24 No.

1 votes. The Jayhawks have four starters back from the team that lost in the regional semifinals last season. Then came the Big East No. 3 Villanova, No. 5 Georgetown and No.

6 Connecticut. UCLA was in the fourth spot. Villanova, which had 1,369 points, and UCLA were the only other schools to receive first-place votes. Villanova had two, UCLA four. The top 10 was completed by Massachusetts, Iowa, Mississippi State and Utah.

The next 10 spots went to Wake Forest, Louisville, Memphis, Missouri, Maryland, Arkansas, Michigan, Stanford, Virginia and North Carolina. The last of the ranked teams were Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, Indiana, Purdue and California. Kentucky lost two starters from last season Rodrick Rhodes and Andre Riddick and has added consensus national prep player of the year Ron Mercer and Ohio State transfer Derek Anderson. The previous 14 preseason No. Is have gone on to considerable success.

None finished out of the top 10 in the final regular-season poll, and each made it to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Eight have reached the Final Four, including national champions North Carolina in 1982, Nevada-Las Vegas in 1990 and Duke in 1992. MISSED FIELD BOYS SOCCER By Mike Eisenbath Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Jeff Harris, maybe more than any other Billiken, hates basketball practice. So Monday night couldn't arrive soon enough for him. All right, it was only an exhibition game. St. Louis University had no trouble disposing of the Arkansas Express 61-38 at Kiel Center.

And the crowd of 10,799 though about 2,000 bigger than the average regular gathering in coach Charlie Spoonhour's first SLU season didn't look or sound anything like the rowdiness that will fill Kiel in coming months. But the Bills got to wear uniforms. They got to feel nervous. They got to play a real game. "I've been counting down the last week hour by hour," Harris said.

"We had one bad practice last week. Everyone was just tired of fighting ourselves in practice. We needed a game." Harris, a junior, is the lone returning starter from a SLU team that went 23-8 and advanced to a second consecutive NCAA Tournament. He started off well Monday, with eight points and eight rebounds in a team-high 30 minutes. The minutes often didn't come in large chunks for anyone.

Spoonhour could have used MetroLink, as he shuttled players in and out constantly in search of productive combinations. All 11 Billikens played, nine more than 11 minutes apiece. Eight never had worn a Billikens uniform before Monday. Two of the newcomers Jamal Johnson and Virgel Cobbin gave SLU particular hope for the season, which continues with another exhibition Saturday at Kiel and opens against Louisiana State on Nov. 24 in Hawaii.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Johnson, a Kirkwood High graduate, led the Bills with 19 points and nine rebounds. The 6-foot-7 senior averaged about nine points at Miami two seasons ago before transferring and sitting out last season. He worked out the kinks Monday with three slams not like last year's Billikens, who weren't noted for their dunking ability. "I tried not to get too nervous about this game," Johnson said. i Cobbin, a 6-4 freshman from Houston, had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Though the Bills hit just four of 15 three-pointers that's not like the old Bills, either Cobbin nailed two of four long-range attempts. "I honestly didn't know what we would do," said Spoonhour, who has a 7-0 exhibition record in his fourth season at SLU. "Early in the game, when our legs were fresh, the defense was good and the offense was a little ragged. That's how it should be." These Billikens showed that their defense will anchor any success that develops. They had nine steals and forced seasoned Express team into 19 turnovers.

SLU had a 20-4 lead more than 14 minutes into the game; the Express missed 13 Qf its first 1 5 shots from the field. The Billikens still have much to learn about themselves. They made under 40 percent of their shots and barely half then-free throws. Guard Corey Frazier eventually should provide perimeter balance to SLU's inside offense, but he made just one of six shots. (' "We got a little tired at times," Harris said.

"You can't get in game shape by practicing every day, with all the walkthroughs and a lot of teaching." i A game, any game, feels much better.
