3. JUL 21995 6B ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH SUNDAY. JULY 2, 1995 New Heart Research Bolsters Findings On Vitamin CHICAGO (AP) New research adds to the evidence that taking vitamin can reduce the risk of heart disease in men. In a study of 156 men with existing heart disease, researchers found that taking daily doses of vitamin for two years appeared to slow the development of fatty deposits, or plaque, in heart arteries.

Such deposits can lead to chest pain and heart attacks. Dr. Howard Hodis, director of the Atherosclerosis Research Unit at the University of Southern California, said more research is needed to prove whether vitamin can actually slow or even block heart disease. "It's hard to say that it's preventative that's what we hope is going to be the bottom line," said Hodis, whose study appears in last week's Journal of the American Medical Association. In research funded by the federal government, Hodis and colleagues examined data from subjects in another heart disease study.

Though not a requirement of that study, many of the subjects decided on their own to take vitamin E. The USC researchers compared angiograms heart X-rays from those subjects before and after the two-year period. Yes, We Did, Before Jefferson Was Edited WASHINGTON (AP) Thomas Jefferson held those truths to be "sacred and undeniable," but Benjamin Franklin, acting as his editor, struck that phrase and made the truths "self-evident." Anyone who has ever put words to paper and then suffered the frustration of seeing them changed, knows how Jefferson must have felt when the Continental Congress worked over his draft of the Declaration of Independence.

Through the Fourth of July, the American public gets to see what was done. Jefferson's original draft, with his words crossed out and substitutes written atop them or in the margins, goes on exhibit at the Library of Congress. The document once was on permanent display, but experts felt light was damaging it. So it has rarely been seen since World War II. It will be in a hall lit by three candle-feet of power, less than a tenth that of a normal room.

Also on display, for the first time ever, will be the only surviving fragment of Jefferson's earliest known draft, on which he labored in solitude in June 1776, writing in a small, clear hand with a quill on linen-type paper. Library manuscript historian Gerard W. Gawalt says about 25 percent of Jefferson's original words were changed either deleted or replaced. Despite the reputation of committees that they turn ringing words into mush "even Jefferson's greatest defenders have said most of the changes were vast improvements," Gawalt said. All told, 86 changes, big and small, were made 47 by a committee composed of Jefferson, Franklin, John Adams, Robert Livingston of New York and Roger Sherman of Connecticut, then 39 others by the Continental Congress, working over the document on July 2 and 3 and the morning of the Fourth, a Thursday, when it was adopted by unanimous vote.

Jefferson used both "states" and the Continental Congress went with "states." Jefferson took the changes none too happily. "Like any author, he felt his writing was better than others' suggestions," Gawalt said. But he didn't enter into the debate. Adams defended Jefferson's work while Jefferson stood by, writing onto his draft the revisions approved by the Congress. "By the time they got to the last paragraph, Jefferson had clearly become upset," Gawalt said.

"Instead of writing in the changes, he just wrote in the margin, 'A different phraseology Cremation: We offer a simple, dignified alternative to traditional funeral homes. In 1980, a summer heat wave led to 1,700 deaths. "With extreme hot temperatures, any person may be at increased risk of heat-related illness and death," said Dr. Sherri Wainwright, an epidemiologist in the centers' National Center for Environmental Health. Between 1979 and 1992, the highest death rates from the heat were reported by Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and South Caro lina. The annual death rate in those states was 1 to 6 per million persons per year.

The chronically ill, the very young, the elderly and people with impaired mobility are at increased risk from summer heat, the agency said. It warned that fans don't provide any benefit in preventing heat-related illness above 90 degrees, unless the air is very dry. "Our normal sweating mechanism, which depends on evaporation to cool us, is no longer functional when there's high humidity," Wainwright said. She said fans can actually increase heat stress when the temperature is above 100. "What results is the fan is blowing hot air onto you, and you're unable to cool yourself.

You're just getting hotter. It acts like a convection oven," Wainwright said. Ambruster-Donnelly 863-1300 St LouisClayton- Pfitzinger 965-8228 Sl Louli CountyKiricwood Cassity 938-3000 'St. Louis CountyEureka1 Lang-Fendler 296-5102 S. CountyJefferson CountyArnold Heiligtag 296-5272 S.

According to the text, Apocaucus, the governor of Constantinople, promised Galvalas his daughter in marriage. But the future bride was repulsed by Galvalas's obesity, prompting him to pay "a large fee" to an Italian diet doctor. The doctor recommended Galvalas eat vegetables, fish and poultry but avoid bread, meat, cheese, and wine.

He also recommended laxatives and thermal baths. But the crash diet was to no avail. LONDON (AP) Thin was in and fat was out as far back as the Middle Ages, a medical historian says. John Galvalas, a 14th century Byzantine fleet commander, was spurned by his fiancee because he was too fat, according to a letter last week in The Lancet, a medical journal. The letter is written by John Las-caratos, a historian who suspects the pitiful tale of the lovesick nobleman recorded in the memoirs of a medieval monk may be the earliest published account of a doctor Family owned and operated information about our services or 5TiT i A.
