OtrT 5 APR 2 91995 SATURDAY. APRIL 29, 1995 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH SPORTS LORRAINE KEE COMMENTARY Tweed' Webb Helped Make Negro Leagues Fashionable stayed everywhere. "You try to do as much cleaning around it as you can," Elaine Bolden said. "He knew exactly where everything was." But the beauty of Webb was that his baseball knowledge wasn't all in his books.

Most of it was cluttered, stacked and curled up in the considerable recesses of his mind. "I've seen 'em all," he would chortle over and over again. Well, just about all. Ask him anything. He'd rattle off an answer with the The things that struck you instantly about Normal "Tweed" Webb were the state of his living room in the Enright Avenue home he lived in for 30 years or so, the speed with which he talked, and his encyclopedic knowledge of the old Negro Leagues.

On Thursday, Webb, the historian on black baseball in St. Louis and an authority on the Negro Leagues, died in his sleep at his home. Webb, 89, left behind two daughters, four sons, 18 grandchildren and 25 greatgrandchildren. His legacy extended beyond, though, to a 'ill seeming ease and expedition of an auctioneer. "You couldn't beat him talking," son Roger Webb said.

The legendary James "Cool Papa" Bell? "I worked to get him into the Hall of Fame," Webb once said of Bell, who was inducted into the Hall in 1974. Andrew "Rube" Foster? "He was the one that organized the National Negro League in 1920. At the age of 12, 1 was a batboy for him." i i new generation of baseball fan just discovering the richness of black baseball. The first time I set eye on Webb's home in April 1992 1 knew I had the right place by the sign in the window. "Tweed Webb Library," it read.

His oldest surviving daughter, Elaine Bol-den, tried to get him to take down that sign. She worried that a stranger would come to the door. Take his things, rather than take a look at Webb's irreplaceable cache of Negro teams by the streets the players lived on, recalled Roger Webb who's cataloguing his father's collection. They learned the nuances of the game on the sandlots. He picked up his nickname about the same time because of his snappy dress.

In the 1920s, he joined the all-black Tandy League where he made a reputation as a solid shortstop despite his short stature. He played for the St. Louis Black Sox and Broomer Tailors in the Tandy League and later professional baseball with the Fort Wayne Pirates. But his association with the Tandy League embraced 44 years as player, manager, official scorer, public relations director and vice president. They called him Mr.

Tandy League and, for his historical legacy he left the game, he was inducted into the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame several years ago as a "contributor." "He was extremely dedicated to local Afro-American players, championing their cause for annual St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame induction," said Bob Broeg, former Post-Dispatch sports editor. "And every year, including just three weeks ago, Webb contributed a well-crafted printed banner for the dinner. "They'll miss him we'll all miss him a nice guy," Broeg said.

I once asked Webb why he'd laid out so large a paper trail. He spoke of his passion for baseball, the pride he took in being black. "I talk baseball every day," he said cheerfully. "Ever since 1910. I'm a dedicated man." A funeral service will be at 11 a.m.

Tuesday at Scruggs Memorial C.M.E. Church, 3680 Cook Avenue. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wade Funeral Home, 4828 Natural Bridge Avenue. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery? If Willie Mays? "He's the greatest ballplayer that ever played." The first blacks to play big-league ball? Not Jackie Robinson.

"The Walker boys in the 1880s. Did you know that? You didn't know that. I figured you being a writer you would know that." I didn't then. Webb, born here in 1905, earned a living for his eight children by painting signs. But he had been a ballplayer himself.

He told his children often about the days when a young Webb would play "street ball." They organized Leagues accounting. "He put the sign back up," Bolden said. She gave up. Webb's living room was his library. It was a lifetime of clutter.

So many stacks of paper. Scrapbook pages whose ends curled. Yellowing newspaper clippings from the days he wrote for the St. Louis American and the St. Louis Argus long before it became fashionable to write about the Negro Leagues in the mainstream media.

Books. Photographs. A dining-room table drowned under the poundage of it all. Organize it? They tried. But everything pretty much Post-Dispatchi Normal "Tweed''- Negro Leagues historian Webb in a 1960s photo.

The Atlantic Division champions buried memories of last year's three-and-out showing against Indiana, riding O'Neal's inspired play and improved free throw shooting to a 124-77 rout of the Boston Celtics at Orlando, Fla.

The victory relieved the Magic of a burden that even the best record in the Eastern Conference couldn't lift during the regular season. Orlando won 57 games but struggled down the stretch, losing seven of its last 11. No one felt the pressure more than O'Neal, whose poor foul shooting is the team's biggest weakness. He was a different player at the line Friday night, much more deliberate in his approach in making 11 of 14 and scoring 23 points. Nick Anderson added 20 points for Orlando and, like O'Neal and the rest of the Magic's starters, sat out the fourth quarter while the bench completed the most lopsided game in Boston's storied history.

The Celtics' previous worst loss was by 44 points to Portland in 1977. Dee Brown led Boston with 20 points, but Dino Radja was held to 10 17 below his season average against Orlando. Game 2 of the best-of-five series will be played Sunday at Orlando Arena, where the Magic won 39 of 41 regular-season games. Orlando stressed defense in practice all week, placing extra emphasis on doing a better job against the pick-and-roll Boston's bread-and-butter offensive play. The Celtics averaged nearly nine points above their season average in five regular-season games between the teams with Radja scoring 27.2 points per game 10 above his average and Sherman Douglas averaging 18.3.

Boston won two of those games, but was never in it Friday night. Orlando scored 16 of the game's first 20 points and led by 22 before settling for a 54-36 halftime lead. It was 88-56 after three quarters. Sonics Vow To Be Different: This year it is different. Dikembe Mutombo isn't lurking like some impregnable monolith.

And Robert Pack isn't pecking insistently at Gary Payton. And LaPhonso Ellis is about 2,000 miles away, preparing for San Antonio. This year, for the Seattle Sonics, will not be Denver Deux. These Sonics are different. This year, there is no internal rancor.

There are no great expectations. There will be no halftime boxing matches. Ricky Pierce is gone. It was pure David against Goliath.

Jordan waived his teammates away, and the Charlotte fans raised the decibel level in 'an effort to assist their diminutive favorite. As Jordan stopped to shoot near the baseline, Bogues stripped the kill away, only to see his effort negated by an illegal-defense call against another Hornet. Still, the confrontation stoked the crowd, and it soon was going bonkers as Bogues led three consecutive' successful fastbreaks. In the last three minutes of the half, Jordan rang up all nine of the Bulls' points on foul shots and jumpers, and Chicago took a 51-49 half-time lead. The Hornets took only one lead in the third quarter, and it lasted a possession.

The Bulls wiped it out when Jordan fed Kukoc for a 3-point basket. Twelve minutes later, Charlotte took another lead, 74-73, on a foul shot by Mourning with 8 minutes, 45 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. Now it was showtime. Jordan scored six points in three minutes, including a tongue-wagging reverse layup straight out of his archives, as the teams waged a tug-of-war for the lead. At the other end, Mourning knocked down consecutive 3-point bombs to heighten the drama and roil the crowd.

The lead changed hands 11 times in the final nine minutes of regulation, and there were four ties. The last tie, at 92-92, lasted the final two minutes. The teams missed seven shots altogether in that stretch. For Chicago, Pippen launched jufct bis third shot of the game, a 20-footer that missed everything with 1:13 left. With 40 seconds left, teammate Luc Longley forced a hook sh6t that missed.

After that, Mourning measured another 3-pointer, but it didn't drop. Johnson got the rebound and called time out with 18 seconds left. When play resumed, Bogues launched risky baseline jumper, and Chicago got the rebound. i A last-ditch 3-point shot by Kukoc fell away, and overtime was jn Person Tisdale Perry Amge Dumas Ruflin 309-638 .484 278-574 .484 306-588 .520 194-422 .460 37-73 .507 84-197 .426 Outlaw Fish Riley .409 263 .427 389 .462 14 571 170-325 .523 49-103 .476 65-145 .448 91-189 .481 4.8 4.7 33 23 tins Wmgate 50-122 7.7 55 4.8 4.4 3.7 2.7 0.9 Martin 1-5 .200 Woods 37-117 .316 .562 153 .410 122 .469 90 .333 14 82 233 303 280 24 11 38-81 Wolf Tolbert 1.4 1.4 Schayes 126-248 .508 Kleine 119-265 .449 Swinson 10-18 .556 Lang 4-10 .400 6-18 Los Angeles Lakers Chicago Bulls Portland Trail Blazers FGM-FGA Pet.
