Corcoran became interested in near-death experience in 1976, when her father had a heart attack. At one point, his heart stopped beating and he was resuscitated, she said. Afterwards, he told her about a strange sensation he had at that time, a feeling that he was moving into a bright light and that "spirits" were.

speaking to him, telling him that he had to "go back." Her father "was never afraid to die after that," Corcpran said, adding that he died of a stroke last year. DOWN. DIAGONALLY IN THE PUZZLE. FIND EACH International Association of Near-Death Studies, centered at the University of Connecticut. She still is on the board of IANDS. She also began working with terminally ill patients at Fort Hood, Texas, where she was stationed, Corcoran said.

One young woman who had lung cancer was terrified of dying. Then she had a near-death experience and was relieved of her fear. When a young medical resident told her it was only a reaction to medication, she was furious at his lack of comprehension of what the experience meant to her, Corcoran said. In conversations with the young woman before she died, Corcoran shared what she had learned in studies of the NDE phenomenon, showing that she took it seriously. The woman made her promise to help medical personnel become more understanding about NDE, Corcoran said, "and I've kept that promise." People who have an NDE "must have a supportive environment" to help them incorporate the experience into their lives, she said.

"Most healthy adults can handle it," Corcoran said, "but children and geriatric patients can be very confused and have nowhere to turn. If they try to talk about it, they may be treated as if they're crazy or creating problems." What health-care providers should do, she added, is "just listen and let them own their experience." Talking about other people's near-death experiences also can help terminally ill patients and their families accept death, Corcoran said. "I tell nurses of terminally ill patients that it's their responsibility to teach families how to let go, to tell their loved ones that it's OK, that they will miss them but want to be with them and help at this transition," she said. Corcoran acknowledges that many are skeptical about NDE and like to point out inconsistencies in some of the experiences reported by people in different parts of the world. But she has found remarkable consistency in the hundreds of NDE stories she has heard, Corcoran said.

"Basically, what they tell includes 15 characteristics, such as seeing bright lights and feeling outside their bodies," she said. "There are cultur- al differences sometimes, depending on the people's backgrounds or religious training. "However, some have reported seeing religious figures even when they are agnostic or from a different religion. Most people feel more deeply spiritual afterwards." Often, children report the most vivid near-death experiences, she said. While researchers say that 38 to 50 percent of people with traumatic injury or illness have NDEs, "the percentage of children who have them is much higher 70 to 80 percent," Corcoran said.

The program here next week will feature a panel of St. Louis-area people who have had NDEs. Corcoran said whenever she conducts a program, she finds that in the audience are several who can relate having had the experience. Peggy Raso, of Ferguson, heads the St. Louis chapter of the International Association for Near-Death Studies.

She is also an "exper-iencer," who can remember vividly what happened 35 years ago when she was pronounced dead and then was resuscitated. She has never feared death since then, Raso says. Like Corcoran, she is well aware that many are skeptics on the subject of NDE. She also deplores the fact that some who may not have had a legitimate experience have written books to "cash in" on public interest in the phenomenon. Raso said she knows that what happened to her was real, and she has heard many stories of similar experiences from others in the St.

Louis chapter, which meets once a month in her home. "Our group is growing all the time," she said, "and many who come to our meetings are medical personnel, hospice nurses and ministers." Seating for the program at St. John's Mercy Hospital is limited. To inquire about registration, call 569-6290. The $60 fee includes lunch.
