Nanny" (PG) (8906287) CHSa Ben-Hur (G) (2431 0962) TMC ES3 Ghostbusters II" (5:30) (2662504) 133 "Oliver Twist" (7:20) (2338829) ES3 Next of Kin" (9:20) (R) (43646813) GARY WHITAKER, then news director of KMOV-TV, Channel 4, became news himself in May 1993 when the Post-Dispatch reported that Channel 4 had attempted to videotape a Roman Catholic priest meeting at a hotel with a male prostitute in the hope of getting the priest to reveal details of sexual activities in the Belleville Diocese. The story was never used by Channel 4. But general manager Allan Cohen, who was consulted on the story beforehand, conceded "some errors of judgment" in pursuing it. Channel 4 reporters Jim Bolen and Jeff Rainford worked on the story under Whitaker's supervision. Bolen continued at Channel 4 until his death this year.

Rainford was released by the station when his contract expired Aug. 1, 1993. Whitaker, now news director for Channel 30, also departed that August. "They gave me the opportunity to resign," says Whitaker. "The circumstances left Viacom owner of Channel 4 in a position where they needed to go with someone new, to get everybody back focused on the job they were supposed to be doing." After leaving Channel 4, Whitaker says, "The next day, I got a job offer in Columbus, Ohio." Later, he had an offer in Nashville.

"But I was interested in trying to stay in St. Louis," he says. Rather than rushing into a new job, Whitaker decided to move to Atlanta while considering his options. "We have family there, and my wife, Joan, has clients there." Joan Whitaker is a marketing consultant, and after the move last Christmas, her husband says, "I sort of became her boy Friday." But from Atlanta, Whitaker began doing consulting work for Channel 30, and was hired in July as its first news director. At the time, he also had an offer in Orlando, Fla.

"I asked my family to choose, Orlando or St. Louis? They wanted to come back here," he says. The Orlando station is owned by Pulitzer Broadcasting whose parent company, Pulitzer Publishing owns the Post-Dispatch. "Because the controversy over the priest story was generated by a story in the Post-Dispatch, to have Pulitzer come after me as a news director was a nice bit of exoneration," Whitaker says. "They said they had to check out what happened at Channel 4.

They investigated it; I answered a lot of questions and talked to people who sounded like lawyers. And in the end they said, 'We understand what happened, and we want to pursue A little bit of weight I'd been carrying around was lifted." Imagine the investment of doing a newscast that doesn't even go on the air." Filandrinos was watching the pieces fall into place. "All the big things are done, and now we're trying to get the small things fixed and ready to go on the air. The major anchors are pros, they've they've done this before, so they don't need a lot of rehearsal. And their camaraderie has been excellent from the start." And Quitoni was polishing his hardware. Two weeks before N-Day, he said, "At this point, the mold is almost set, but it's a little like Jell-0 we've got a form, but we still have time to shape it just a little more so everybody feels comfortable." 1 And Beyond: Careful Hopes Filandrinos' hope for the newscast is to be competitive, although he adds, "I'm a realist. I know it will be difficult to get huge ratings. But I think we'll do good numbers." Baker hopes for a newscast that he can look at and say, "That's a credible and competitive product." In the short term, his goal is to be the No. 1 newscast at 9 p.m. In the longer term, he wants to be competitive at 10 p.m.

(and eventually 5 and 6 p.m. as well), but he notes, "News viewing is based more on habit than anything else." Still, "ABC is the No. 1 network, and they provide the kind of lead-ins attractive to news viewers." Ratings for Channel 2 news have been low for many years, Baker notes, adding that ABC has promised to support its new affiliate "with a significant promotional commitment to making St. Louis a good ABC market." People said they want more positive stories." Whitaker was going down to the wire on hiring. Lane, after conducting several, hundred half-hour interviews, asking people what they wanted in a newscast, was wondering how to let viewers know the station was interested. In a typical situation, a station may change an anchor or a set, but the foundation of a news-gathering situation is in place, and the new folds in. Here, we're actually creating the foundation." On-air talent was arriving. "At first," Whitaker says, "we were just producing the newscast in the computer and putting someone on set, reading for 30 minutes. Then we started shooting tape and integrating tape and graphics and music.

As people showed up, we started putting more people in."
