By OREO PERLI3KI Times Staff Writer Upper Guadalupe River Authority will lest extensively the waters of the Guadalupe River this summer to get a better grip on sources of pollution.

The decision came alter discovering that county-wide water tests of the Guadalupe River reveal a connection between fecal coliform bacteria and the presence of phosphates. 'The total phosphate is peaking at the same time the fecal coliform is peaking," Hall said. "It's just something to keep a watch on. we will be doing more work on the fecals this summer and the phosphates as well to see if that is part of the equation." Traditionally the UORA has used a measurement of fecal coliform bacteria to test for waste water pollution in waterways. Fecal bacteria presents a concern because it originates in the colon of humans and animals and can cause a variety of diseases or infections, such as typhoid, dysentery and cholera.

Bob Hall, lab director at the DORA, says the water authority will focus its effort on areas of the Guadalupe River that flow near Keir County's popular summer camps. According to the state, water containing more than 200 colonies of fecal bacteria per 100 milUUton of water is considered unsafe for recreational use. But the UGR A has had trouble using that standard in the Hill Country. Rural areas surrounding the Guadalupe River coupled with heavy rain- fail that often occurs in the time can boost fecal coliform i without any pollution from made sewer systems. In fact, to improve on the traditional fecal coliform test, the UGRA has developed a test for E-coli, a specific strain of fecal bacteria.

E-coli lives outside the human body for a short time and is a better indicator of harmful bacteria found in sewer and septic systems.
