"fNaweeieeej sports ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Iec. 3, 1986 5E Only Ex-Lincoln oach Wiggins iemains In San leg Kathleen Nelson Women's XT' Sports The 6-4 Perry was recruited by more than 100 college coaches including Riggins as a high school star in Brookhaven, Mass. She chose Northeast Louisiana and led the Lady Indians to the NCAA semifinals in 1984-85. But after an 18-month investigation, the NCAA found six violations in the recruiting of Perry.

The women's basketball program was placed on probation for a year; coach Linda Harper was prohibited from recruiting off campus for a year; and Perry was ruled ineligible to represent the university. Riggins had a 44-14 record in his first two seasons, but fell to 14-16 last season. He hoped Perry would choose San Diego State because of what then appeared to be the likely loss of Hutchinson andor Wallace. inson averaged 29.9 points and 10 rebounds that season. Her first setback came late in the season when, through an administrative goof, Hutchinson was denied a chance to try out for the U.S.

Olympic team. Riggins' efforts for an appeal were in vain. The hurdle that the 6-foot-3 Hutchinson failed to clear, however, was a series of knee injuries in her sophomore season. She underwent arthroscopic surgery at midseason but came back too soon and needed reconstructive surgery in March 1985. She was likely to have been red-shirted in 1985-86, but left the school instead.

Hutchinson failed classes in the spring semester in 1985 and didn't have the 72 credit units necessary to achieve junior standing. Perry was eligible to play this season and made the national team. But Riggins and athletic director Fred Miller didn't like what they saw on Perry's transcript. "I told her to get here right away and get herself enrolled in the sum-' mer semester," Riggins said. "She was here the next day." Perry will be redshirted this season for academic reasons.

"Given the atmosphere she's been living in the past few years, I don't think I could have done well. I would have wanted some time to clear my mind," Riggins said. "She's doing well now, so once she steps on the basketball floor she won't have to worry about her GPA." Sounds like Riggins if not Hutchinson or Wallace has learned his lessons well. Riggins said that he spoke to Hutchinson on Monday and that she was happy. "I think being in Italy will give her a chance to collect her thoughts.

"I doubt she will play basketball in college again, but I think she will go back to school." As her guardian, Riggins could do little to keep her in school. "I don't think even natural parents have a whole lot to say in a situation like that. You can tell them what is right, but they have to know themselves well enough to know whether they can do what is right." In her two seasons with the Lady Aztecs, the 6-4 Wallace averaged 10 points and six rebounds. But like Hutchinson, she didn't have enough credits to earn junior standing. She attended San Diego Mesa College in 1985-86 and brought her grades up.

She considered transferring to another Division I school, then decided she was better off at home. She could not be reached at her home in East St. Louis. "I still say she is a tremendous athlete who could make a tremendous contribution," Riggins said. "She just has to set her mind to it.

I think she's trying." But Riggins has not been left alone in San Diego. Waiting in the wings at San Diego State is Chana Perry, the woman responsible for the first sanctions imposed against a women's athletic program for illegal recruiting. After an injury like Tina's, your mind begins to play tricks on you, San Diego, the city with a reputation for the most ideal climate and some of the friendlier people in the nation, has been anything but warm and congenial to Tina Hutchinson, Toni Wallace and Earnest Riggins of East St. Louis. Hutchinson and Wallace played for Riggins at Lincoln High before the three headed west in 1983 with the hope of turning around the basketball program at San Diego State.

But three years later, Hutchinson is in Italy, Wallace is back home and Riggins is left in San Diego to put the pieces back together. Hutchinson was the rare fe-; male athlete who earned a rightful share of media coverage in high school. She was recruited by most of the major colleges but chose to stay with Riggins, who accepted the job at San Diego State. The Lady Aztecs were 23-5 in 1983-84, her freshman season, and earned a bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. Hutch Riggins said.

"I don't think she handled it well. She felt a failure on the court and in society." Hutchinson enrolled at Palomar Junior College in San Marcos and stayed for a year. She left this past spring to play professional basketball in Italy. The injury wasn't Hutchinson's biggest obstacle, Riggins said, "it was the academics. With any student, it takes time to adjust to college.

Some adjust better and faster. Tina just never did." JUS. I 7 rnnnr Sports Shorts zJ Football Choose Vector Radials. Choose Arriva Radials. Two of Goody ear's best all season radials and some of the best value prices.

The suspension will cost him $15,000 two-sixteenths of his $120,000 base salary.

Rozelle also announced the suspension of Bears linebacker Otis Wilson for one game for a forearm blow to the head of Pittsburgh Pirates receiver Louis Llpps. Barring an appeal, Wilson will miss Sunday's game against the Bucs. Baseball Davey Johnson, who had threatened to refrain from his managerial duties if his contract was not renegotiated, came to terms Tuesday with the New York Mets. Neither Johnson nor the National League club would reveal details of the adjustment which covers the remaining two years on the three-year contact he signed after the 1985 season. Basketball University of Missouri-St.

Louis guard Eric Love, a junior from Wichita, was selected player of the week by the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Love averaged 21.7 points per game last week 27 points in a 91-84 loss to Southern Indiana and 16 points in an 86-64 loss to Florida Southern. He shot 60 percent from the field and 71 percent (eight of 11) from 3-point range. Hockey The Hartford Whalers have lost left wing Torrie Robertson for the remainder of the National Hockey League season. Two bones in his left leg were broken when Robertson, 25, fell to the ice Saturday in Montreal during a fight with the Canadiens' Shayne Corson.

The financially troubled Wichi- ta State University foothall pro-1 gram was suspended indefinitely Tuesday by WSU President War-' ren Armstrong. He said he made the decision because of deficit spending and the recommenda-; tion of a consultant who has been studying the athletic department since April. Three starters on the Brigham Young University team and a for-' mer BYU player were charged in Provo, Utah, with felony counts involving prescription drugs. Charged were J.C. VonColln, a junior linebacker from Clearfield, Utah; Trevor Molinl, a junior tight end from Reno, Ladd Akeo, a senior linebacker from Pearl City, Hawaii; and Steve Sanders, a former linebacker from Orange, Calif.

Sanders was suspended from the team and school this fall after alleged involvement in a similar incident, a BYU spokeman said. Jack Pardee, 50, who played 15 years in the National Football League and coached the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins, was hired as coach by the University of Houston. He succeeds Bill Yeoman, who retired from coaching after 25 years to take a post in the university administration. Interim athletic director Michael Johnson said Pardee was given a four-year contract that renews itself each year and pays $100,000 annually. NFL Commissioner Pete Ro-zelle upheld his two-game suspension of Green Bay Packers nose tackle Charles Martin, and team officials said the decision probably set a precedent for sanctions on late hits.

Martin, who slammed Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon to the ground during a Nov. 23 game, will miss Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vi Whitewall I Value I I Whltewall Value Size Price Size Price P17575R13 $41.92 P20575R14 $52.84 P17580R13 $42.42 P20575R15 $53.96 P18580R13 $42.92 P21575R15 $55.96 P17575R14 $46.97 P22575R15 $58.58 P18575R14 $47.99 P23575R15 $60.96 P19575R14 $47.99 Radials for Small Cars And Imports G-Metric Radial Computerized Engine Performance Analysis $4 JT Our computerized mm engine analyzer per-Mm forms more than 100 comprehensive lesls on your car's engine Problems are pinpointed quickly and accurately You'll oe given a compuler printout that clearly identities problem areas. From page one i stopped drives by Bruce Bell, Federko and Nattress. "The first two periods we played nose-to-nose with them," Martin said. "We were losing 3-1 but we had good chances. Propp's third goal, at 3:44 of the third period, finally put the Blues away. Howe broke in on the right side and was denied by Millen's sprawling save.

But when the Blues didn't clear the rebound Bell had the best chance i Propp walked in and flipped the puck into the open net to make it 4-1. The Flyers poured in on Millen with two goals seven seconds apart. Brown slammed home a rebound and, after the faceoff, Propp broke in cold and scored his fourth goal of the game. Howe concluded the scoring with a rink-long, short-handed rush that beat and finished Millen. Bluenotes: The last Blues victory in Philadelphia was on Jan.

6, 1972. That was the night coach Al Arbour was doused with beer leaving the Ice after the second period, precipitating a brawl among the Blues, Flyers fans and police. Right winger Mark Reeds' burned right hand is not as bad as originally thought. His third-degree burns are limited to the web between his thumb and forefinger. He has resumed skating and is wsrking with therapists at Jewish Hospital.

But no date for Reeds' return has been set. Rookie right winger Todd Ewen was hospitalized Monday night with a flu virus. Ewen was supposed to join the team in Philadelphia Tuesday, but had a 103-degree fever. The unofficial count of Blues' man-games missed due to injuries rose to 77 Tuesday. The breakdown: Eddy Beers, 23 games (back surgery); Kent Carlson, 23 games (back surgery); Rob Ra-mage, 12 games (tendinitis around his kneecap); Brian Sutter, nine games (hamstring pull, shoulder bruise); Reeds, four games (hand burn); Bruce Bell, three games (groin pull); Greg Paslawski, two games "(cracked ribs); and Charlie Bourgeois, one game (thigh bruise) M.
