3 NOV 26 1986 for the Sports Shorts 6C Football ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Nov. 26,1986 Football TV, Radio Sports UPI All-Big Ten Teams Reserve center Adam Lingner was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs. Lingner had been with the team since 1983, when he was a ninth-round draft choice from Illinois. He had snapped the ball on nearly every punt and place-kick since joining the team.

Wide receiver Gary Clark of the Washington Redskins and safety Nolan Cromwell of the Los Angeles Rams are the National Football Conference's offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively. Clark caught eight passes for 152 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown, in Washington's 41-14 victory over Dallas. Cromwell had two interceptions, forced a fumble and made five tackles in the Rams' 26-13 victory over New Orleans. University of Wisconsin athletic officials could name their head football coach by the weekend. Athletic director Elroy Hlrsch said the top candidate is Tulsa University coach Don Morton.

Coleman had his suspension reduced to 14 games because he played for Kansas State last season despite having a high-school grade-point average of less than 2.0. 2 4 130 188 3 9 0 201 266 Purdue 269 105 253 3uiuui Clinched conference title By Dave Dorr Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Paul Gompers has experienced a rare college cross country season. He has progressed from race to race, and for a distance runner that's like turning a mountain into a molehill. In spite of the fact that courses vary widely, the hills in cross country pose a giant challenge psychologically for even the best. Improvement on the track Is expected, but it takes an intricate game plan to do what Gompers has done in chopping the hills down to size. On Monday he made it look easy, even though it wasn't, in finishing fifth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association cross country championships in Tucson, Ariz.

Joe Leuchtmann of Illinois, another former area standout, was 20th. Leuchtmann is from Ritenour High. Gompers, a Harvard senior, ran the course in 31 minutes 2 seconds and, except for one costly lapse in concentration, wondered Tuesday if he could have won it all. He described the Canada Hills Country Club course as "very, very tough." "It was constantly up and down with long stretches of sand that really sap your strength," he said. Gompers was with a small pack of runners in the lead surged, they caught Gompers off guard and he lost contact.

It took him a half-mile to gather himself. "I don't know why, but my concentration faded. I fell back to eighth," said Gompers, a 1982 graduate of Belleville East High. "On a course like that, half a mile is all it takes. But I'm incredibly pleased elated with my finish.

"I figured before the meet 15 guys had a chance to win, and I put myself in that group. At that level, there are no hacks running. I ran a very good race; not perfect, but I'm extremely happy. "Each race of the season has been better, just the way I planned it. I skipped certain meets in consultation with my coach and geared my training for the NCAA." He will leave Friday for San Francisco, where he will participate in The Athletics Congress cross country meet the national open championships.

"It's another step up," said Gompers, who established a world junior marathon record of 2:15.26 in 1983 that still stands. He placed third in 1985 in the marathon in the World University Games in Japan, then spent six months in Leverkusen, West Germany, doing biochemistry research. He has applied for a Rhodes scholarship, keeping in mind the two important track and field meets to be held in 1987 the Pan American Games in Indianapolis and the World Championships in Rome.
