During the convention at Biloxi; the Office Location Committee heard presentations by Atlanta, Louisville, New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh as well as St Louis. Mayor Vincent C. Schoemehl Jr. made a personal appeal for St Louis at the meeting. Louisville, which was not a finalist, also made a strong bid: Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson, Kentucky Gov.

Martha Lane Collins and other officials made a presentation to the committee. Louisville is home to one of the denomination's major seminaries. The standing committee's choice of Kansas City will be forwarded to the full 650-member assembly for a final vote on Tuesday. A floor debate will take place before the vote, but the recommendations of both the site selection committee and the standing committee should prevail for Kansas City to be the new home of the church, a spokesman for the denomination said. By Victor Volland Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Kansas City won out over St Louis and several other cities Saturday as the future home of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the country's largest Presbyterian denomination.

A standing committee of the 199th General Assembly of the church, which is meeting in Biloxi, overwhelmingly seconded the earlier recommendation of Kansas City, given by a site selection committee. The vote by the 73-member Committee Office Location and Mission Design was 49 for Kansas City, 19 for Louisville, three for Philadelphia, two for Pittsburgh and none for St Louis, New York and Atlanta. St Louis had been one of the three finalists considered by the site selection committee. The committee had been working on selecting a home for the church since the United Presbyterian Church in the United States, based in New York, merged in 1983 with the Presbyterian Church in the United States, which had central offices in Atlanta. A committee of laymen and ministers revised the paper to make it clear that Palestinians should be included in peace discussions in the regions.

The new language also says God's promise of land is "a biblical metaphor for sustainable life, prosperity, peace and security." Other changes made by the committee included rejection of specific language calling for formation of a Center for Reconciliation in Jerusalem in favor of directing denomination officials to support reconciliation "in as broadly and ecumenical a way as possible." BILOXI, Miss. (AP) A committee of Presbyterians adopted a statement Saturday defining Judeo-Chris-tian relations but softened language that some churchmen supported Israeli land claims. The paper, "A Theological Understanding of the Relationship Between Christians and Jews," was designed to foster understanding between Judaism and Christianity. But it sparked controversy at the. 199th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) over concerns that it could be interpreted as giving biblical support to Israeli land claims in what was once Palestine.
