if St. Charles Rich Knight says that after he completed his masters degree in industrial education at Northeast Missouri State University in Klrks-vllle 10 years ago, he discovered quartet singing as a way to relax. "Things had been hectic, with school and all," recalled Knight 36, a St Charles resident "So one night my wife, Mary, and I went over to the Festival of the Little At the festival, the Daniel Boone Chorus, the St Charles chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing In America, caught his attention. "Before the night was over, was singing with the chorus," he said. Now, Knight is not only one of 70 members in the Daniel Boone Chorus, but also a tenor with the Gateway City Slickers barbershop quartet The Gateway City Slickers will compete during the Fourth of July weekend in the International Barbershop Quartet Competitions in Hartford, Conn.

In addition to practicing with the Daniel Boone Chorus Tuesday evenings at the St Charles Presbyterian Church at Gamble and Sibley streets in St Charles, Knight and the three other members in his quartet are practicing twice a week to prepare for the competitions. The other members of the Gateway City Slickers are Asa Wilson of Manchester, Barry Mohr, also of Manchester, and David Wright of St Louis. All four men belong to the Daniel Boone Chorus. "With three evenings of practice, we've been hit hard," said Knight an industrial arts teacher at Fort Zumwalt Central Junior High School. DINNER CRUISE The St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department is accepting reservations for a dinner cruise on the Becky Thatcher Riverboat June 7 on the Mississippi.
