Obituaries General News ST. LOUIS POST- DISPATCH May 26, 1987 'Spirit Of Kansas City' To Try Trans-Atlantic Flight Again KANSAS CITY (AP) Two men from the Kansas City area who failed last week in an attempt to duplicate Charles Lindbergh's solo trans-Atlantic flight in 1927 say they plan to try again. Mark R. Hirt of Lee's Summit, was forced Friday to land his experimental airplane dubbed "The Spirit of Kansas City" at St. John's, Newfoundland, less than eight hours after he took off from New York.

The flight was aborted after Hirt decided the plane was burning too much fuel and that weather conditions might deplete fuel supplies before the plane arrived in Paris. The owner of the aircraft, Tom Colgan, of Overland Park, said he and Hirt planned to modity it and try again. "We are planning another attempt," Colgan said in a telephone interview from Morristown, N.J. "But it won't be tomorrow. It might be in a couple of months.

We are going to have to regroup." The aircraft is one of about 1,000 built from a design by Burt Rutan, the creator and pilot of the Voyager, an experimental plane that successfully flew around the world without refueling last year. Hirt and Colgan put up $75,000 for their project, which included installing a special fuel tank and modifying the engine for greater speed. Van's Driver Faces DUI Charge In Crash Fatal To 2 On Cycle Two people on a motorcycle were killed early Monday in a wrong-way, head-on collision in 1 St. Clair County caused by a man suspected of being intoxicated, authorities said. Killed were the cyclist, Daniel L.

Pruett, 26, of New Athens, and Donna R. Lane, 32, of Freeburg, who was riding on the back. The accident took place about 1:20 a.m. on Illinois Route 13, just south of Freeburg and Illinois Route 15. Pruett and Lane were pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators that a Ford van had struck the motorcycle head-on. The van's driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at St. East St. Louis Teen Dino P. Jackson, 19, drowned about 4 p.m.

Monday while trying to swim across the lake at Frank Holten State Park in St. Clair County during a family picnic, authorities say. Jackson, of 1709 Lynch Street in East St. Louis, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7 p.m. by Dale Robinson, deputy St.

Clair County coroner. Officer Stephanie Schneider of the Illinois State Police gave this account: Jackson was picnicking with about 30 relatives and friends at the park, which is between East St. Louis and Alorton. His brother-in-law, Arthur Bingham, of the same address, told police that Jackson had been "drinking heavily" before he decided to go Howard Baker's Wife WASHINGTON (AP) Joy Baker, wife of White House chief of staff Howard H. Baker has entered Georgetown University Hospital for tests as a follow-up to gastrointestinal surgery, a White House spokesman said Monday.

The Memorial Day rally was jointly sponsored by the Missouri Pledge Resistance, the People's Coalition of Missouri and the Missouri Rural Crisis Center. Peggy Moore, the coordinator of the Pledge of Resistance, dubbed the Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville. He was turned over to authorities.

The driver, who lives in Freeburg, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence and improper lane usage. He was being held Monday without bond in St. Clair County jail. Illinois State Police is expected today to seek criminal charges against him. According to witnesses, the driver of the van was northbound on Route 13 and the motorcycle was southbound.

The van passed a vehicle at high speed then continued in the southbound lane for some distance, and struck the motorcycle, which burst into flames. Drowns In State Park swimming. "He was going to swim across the lake," Schneider said. "He got out about 50 feet and turned around and started back." About 20 feet from shore, Jackson went under the water. Danny Amonett, of East St.

Louis, searched for Jackson after seeing him disappear into the lake but was unable to find him. Amonett then went to the park ranger's station and called the state police. An ambulance attendant, James Wilson, also tried without success to find Jackson. Firefighters from the Long Lake Fire Department dragged the lake and found Jackson about 6:50 p.m. in water approximately 10 feet deep.
