Jackson, 19, drowned about 4 p.m. Monday while trying to swim across the lake at Frank Holten State Park in St Clair County during a family picnic, authorities say. Jackson, of 1709 Lynch Street in East St Louis, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7 p.m. by Dale Robinson, deputy St Clair County coroner. Officer Stephanie Schneider of the Illinois State Police gave this account-Jackson was picnicking with about 30 relatives and friends at the park, which is between East St Louis and Alorton.

His brother-in-law, Arthur Bingham, of the same address, told police that Jackson bad been "drinking heavily" before be decided to go swimming. "He was going to swim across the lake," Schneider said. "He got out about 50 feet and turned around and started back." About 20 feet from shore, Jackson went under the water. Danny Amonett of East St searched for Jackson after seeing him disappear into the lake but was unable to find bim. Amonett then went to the park ranger's station and called the state police.

An ambulance attendant James Wilson, also tried without success to find Jackson. Firefighters from the Long Lake Fire Department dragged the lake and found Jackson about 6:50 p.m. in water approximately 10 feet deep. father of Sharon Jeck and Chad Reasoner, our dear son-in-law. stepfather, grandtatner, uncle and cousin.
