APPROVE 1 Only Cenuina 1 terms ft 4 1 f. By Neal Russo When Kathy Dillard was driving Joe Cunningham to meet iter parents in Mammoth Spring, for the first time, she knew that Joe Sports as a big'city boy even yfe though his home town in New Jersey was Saddle River Township. Big Hackensack is close to Saddle River. So, when the car struck a chicken on a country road and the feathers flew, Kathy stopped end telephoned ahead to her farming parents just across the Missouri-Arkansas border. "I knew Joe had a weak stomach and I wanted to make sure my folks weren't having fried chicken, a favorite back home Kathy recalled.

Kathy. an attractive brunette who took popular Joe off the bachelor list just before he was 30, is finding him as unpredictable as he was when he went after fly balls as a Cardinal outfielder. "Joe holds a steamfitter'i card and he's worked on a lot of large buildings but he can't fix a dripping faucet in the kitchen," she said. Then there was the tractor incident on the Cunningham ranch it's Cowboy Joe now at Mammoth Spring. Trying out the new tractor, Joe strayed from a trail on the 170-acre ranch and the tractor was hung up between trees with wheels up.

The embarrassed city boy had to be freed with the help of his in-laws, who operate the ranch. Cunningham, still highly rated for his ability to make amazing acrobatic catches out of routine fly balls, brings even more laughs when he tries to tackle a hog and hold on to it so that it can be vaccinated. Speaking of needles, Joe can give as well as receive. For instance, he will disguise his voice and phone a sports writer, saying "This is the Internal Revenue Department-Ave'd like Convenient credit easily 'Routine' for Horizontal Joe Joe Cunningham males on of his famous diving catches at Busch Stadium. He frequently led the league in spectacular grabs of ordinary fly balls.

Knows Pop's Weakness a Joe Cunningham, blinking as usual, gets ready to field a thrown by slugging 2-year-old Joe at their home in Mrs. Kathy Cunningham and Coin Shortage Traced to been captain of her high school basketball team, became a good baseball fan with nightly lessons at the ball park from Ted Glenn, who was rooming with Joe in Gaslight Square several years ago when a tornado struck the area. Joe said he was reading a Bible at the time. When Cunningham was having a good first year with the White Sox at first base, his regular position, after the Cardinals traded him following the 1961 season, Kathy missed only five games. Joe, bothered by injuries, slumped tost spring in Chicago.

Kathy no longer was a regular fan. "She's a front-runner," said Cunningham, The chief reason Kathy passed up some games was that she was expecting their second child. Peter Cunningham arrived in December. His big brother is Joe, 2 years old. Kathy rates Joe's trade to the lowly Washington Senators last July as the low point of his career.

"We loved Chicago," Kathy related. "We rented a nice home and had good neighbors. The timing of the trade was what really hurt. When the Cardinals traded Joe, we had just bought a home (in north St. Louis County, where the Cunninghams still live).

But we were expecting the trade from the Cardinals. "For about a month before the trading deadline last year, I bought just a few groceries at a time because Joe and I felt he would be traded. Then when the deadline passed and he still was with the White Sox, I went out and bought $30 worth of groceries. Then came the trade. There was one consolationDon Blasingame and his wife Sara had an apartment waiting for us in Washington near theirs." Blasingame is another former Cardinal now with the Senators.

Joe reaches back to spring training time, 1955, for his No. 1 disappointment a trip back to the minors. His high point had come Just the season before when he broke in with three home runs in his first two big league games a major league record collected nine runs batted in those first two games and finished the half-season with 50 RBIs, 11 home runs and a .284 batting average. Two of those first three homers came off the great Warren Spahn. Dietic strawberry pie and spare ribs with lemon and onion are Joe's two favorites from Kathy's kitchen.

"Joe usually doesn't eat much after a night game, unless we go out," Kathy said. "I can tell whether he's had a bad night at the ball park. He doesn't complain, but I can tell from his mood. "So I bring up some subject other than baseball. Often it's the ranch.

He always likes to talk about the ranch and the 50 cattle. That kind of talk is better than medicine." (Next: Mrs. Howdy Sanders) GOLF AT ITS GREATEST! Blasingame, the leadoff man at the altar, paid off to Cunningham in pennies 5000 of them in a bucket with oil, grease and molasses. When Joe was married, he turned the slick pennies over to Goodwin.

When Goodwin and another friend, Jim Walsh, announced to Joe, who has had a great respect for money, that they found two rare pennies worth $300 in the bucket, an amazed Cunningham almost dropped a sandwich from his hands, Goodwin and Walsh were kidding. 7012V An aqual opportunity ampiovar The winner and Kutis is favoredwill advance to regional playoffs leading to the United States Open championship. Kutis has won six Missouri Open Cup titles, the last one in 1962. Bob Fitzgerald, St. Kevin coach, should know as much about the Kutis style of play as any Kutis opponent of 1965. Fitzgerald played with the Zenthoeffers before that club switched to the Kutis banner and helped train some of the players now on the Kutis roster.

"If anyone should know our style of play," said Kutis coach Tony Mercurio, "I guess Fitzgerald should. But our squad is ready and we've shown ability to play in mud before." Fitzgerald's St. Kevin athletes scored two victories over highly regarded White Star in Cup games this season. Joe Hennessy, former St. Louis University All-America a controversial figure in the recent White Star protest over his use in Amateur Cup play is eligible for the Open final.

In a preliminary at 12:45, the Schumachers will meet the Ca-rondelet Sunday Morning Club.
