The four hoodlums were arrested shortly after the shootings at a Cairo motel.

They had been driving an automobile belonging to Baker and had switched to another of his vehicles. Baker was seen previously in the company of three of the four men. Authorities have had the men under surveillance. Efforts in Bootheel Sheriffs John Dennis of Scott county and Pedro Simmons of Mississippi county told a reporter that Baker and his representatives had made several attempts to move into their counties. "We haven't had any direct contact with the hoodlums in our county yet," Dennis said.

"They've just been putting feelers out, sending their salesmen in and the likes." Simmons told a reporter that vending machines owned by Baker had been removed from all but one establishment in Mississippi county. "I first learned about this several weeks ago and I told Baker to get his machines out of my county," Simmons said "When he didn't, we went around to the owners of a couple of bowling alleys, a shoe factory and other places and asked them to discontinue their business with Baker. They did." Quarrel at Sheriff's House Simmons said that Baker and his wife came to the sheriff's house last Friday night and a "short, heated argument" developed. "I stopped the argument by telling Baker to come to the office if he wanted to see me," Simmons said. The sheriff said that Baker had purchased an interest in a bowling alley in East Prairie, Mo.

Simmons said that efforts to have several of Baker's machines removed from that establishment have failed. Mississippi county, with a population of about 20,000, and Scott county, about 33,000, are directly across the Mississippi river from Alexander county in Illinois. George J. Liebig of Cape Girardeau, district supervisor of the Missouri Liquor Control Department for southeast Missouri, said that law enforcement officials in the area "were expecting an attempted takeover, but so far none has developed to the point where it approached being a threat." Liebig said that two distributors serve the area and both are considered legitimate dealers. Neither dealer has reported any pressure or loss of business because of hoodlum activities, he said.
