C4 GETTYSBURG TIMES WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27,2007 Arts Leisure Emmaus BY AARON YOUNG Times Staff Writer Just beyond Lincoln Square, at 49 York a new venue is welcoming area youth. It is a place with an open stage, a coffeehouse atmosphere, a bowling alley, a thrift store and a residence of nine. It is Emmaus. What exactly is Emmaus? That's "not easily answered," said Ryan Kudasik, 26- Upcoming events at Emmaus June 28 Open Mic night hosted by Blue Daniel James June 30 Everthus the Deadbeats, an indie-pop show July 2 Destroy the Runner, a heavier metal show July 10 The Listener, a hip-hop show July 17 Ice Cream Social and Open House open to anyone Wednesdays Bowling from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays Open Mic night from 7 to 10 p.m.

A full list of events can be found at http://www.thisisemmaus.com year-old acting director. With the number one focus being on the community, Kudasik explained Emmaus is a volunteer-run place in downtown Gettysburg for area teens and youth to come and be themselves. "We're free of human judgment," Kudasik said. "We accept all people, no matter where they are in their lives." Set in an old Elks lodge building, nine young adults from different walks of life live in the house that plays host to a thrift store, bowling alley and live entertainment. Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m.

to 5 p.m., Emmaus is a self-sustaining thrift store. "We were dreaming about a place that can help the community," Kudasik said. "It really just started as a big yard sale, but now it's the biggest thrift store venue in Gettysburg." The yard sale efforts were originally to raise money for people in Darfur, Sudan. As donations kept on coming, Emmaus became self-sustaining with more than 1,000 clothing items, CDs and books, small furniture, household items and children's items all under $5. Any money raised today goes to nonprofit efforts in Adams County or across the world.

In addition to the thrift store located It's a little bit of everything upstairs, the building also has a bowling alley welcoming youth every Wednesday night from 7 to 10p.m. For $2, anyone can come and bowl on the two lanes open a first come, first serve basis. Occasionally, live music will also be playing in the lounge where there are card and video games. The alley can also be rented for private parties by appointment. On Thursday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m., Emmaus turns into an open mic venue for anyone to come and play music, read poetry and stories, tell jokes or display any talents.

"It's not just about music," Kudasik said. "But it has really created a lot of good networking for smaller bands." In addition to the local talent of open mic nights, Emmaus hosts bands on weekends, playing anything from metal to rock and indie-pop to country. With a 250-square-foot stage, the venue is always changing, depending on the type of show. Sometimes the venue will include tables and chairs for the laid-back shows while a higher energy show will have room for up to 275 people. Resident Levis Landis had the vision for the music aspect of Emmaus, but everyone in the house enjoys the tunes, according Kudasik.

"It's a no brainer," Kudasik said. "We all love music." Many of the bands are personal friends of the residents and word of the venue gets spread from band to band. During open mic and band nights, Emmaus has a full caffi offering beverages and smaller food items. However, of all the things Emmaus has to offer, Kudasik said the best aspect is the people that come to hang out. "It's really exciting," Kudasik said.

"People from all walks of life come together as one big family. It's amazing." No membership is required for event attendance or community nights. Additionally, Emmaus is not officially affiliated with any area organizations or churches, though Kudasik said all of the residents attend and help at area churches and Christian bands will be hosted from time-to-time. "It really is a place for anyone," Kudasik said. "You can come and ask the bigger life questions and seek answers or BILL Emmaus Coffee House is located at 49 York St.
