Boyer and Pills Perk Redbirds By Neal Russo The Chicago Cubs wish Ken Boyer had made that local call instead of going for long distance. "I had dysentery all afternoon and was set to call the ball park and tell them I couldn't make it," Boyer said. "I thought I was getting the same thing that knocked out Stan (Musial). But 1 figured that if I did suddenly feel worse, I'd be better off at the park than at home." Trainer Bob Bauman, who gave Boyer some pills, said, "I'm the only one Ken complained to. He didn't beg off the way some players do, and you saw what he did in the ninth inning." Boyer hit a three-run homer that beat the Cubs, 8-5, last night and enabled the third baseman to become the first National Leaguer with 100 runs batted in.

The victory, which featured Mike Shannon's spectacular steal of home and three hits by Lou Brock that put his average against the Cubs at .452, was the Redbirds' ninth in their last 11 games. The Cardinals recaptured third place from the San Francisco Giants and remained seven and onehalf games from first place. Two nights earlier, the Milwaukee Braves' Gene Oliver asked Ken Boyer for one of his Gold Gloves, emblematic of fielding supremacy, saying, "You'll get a lot Boyer, a weary third baseman in his tenth season, said, "I've already given my 1965 Gold Glove and All-Star team vote to Ron Santo." After watching Boyer's nineteenth homer, a shot to the pavilion roof at Busch Stadium, off Fred Burdette, Santo was ready to cast his '65 votes for Ken. the season, I said getting 100 RBIs in our league would be tough with all the good pitching," Boyer, said. "But had a good horses on base ahead of me, and I've been getting a lot of RBI mileage out of my extra-base hits." Hump-backed hits by Carl Warwick and Brock in the ninth set the table for Boyer's first homer to the roof this season.

An inning earlier, Shannon and Bob Skinner singled with two down against Lindy McDaniel. The double steal was flashed and Chicago catcher Jim Schaffer fired the ball to shortstop Jim Stewart, who threw home. Shannon faked to his right as he headed for the plate, then slid deftly to his left as Schaffer missed the tag. "A great slide," yelled Eddie Stanky, the Cardinals' director of player development. Coach Red Schoendienst said, "Shannon faked beautifully, like halfback with only one man left between him and the goalline." Shannon thus more than made up for his difficulties with caroms in right field and for an errant throw home instead of to the cutoff man.

Another ailing Redbird, Dick Groat, again chipped in with his bat, singling runs across in the first and third innings off Dick Ellsworth. Groat is limping on a sore heel. The Cardinals' starter, Curt Simmons, also had early troubles, giving up two runs the first inning, then settling down until the seventh, when the Cubs scored twice with two out. "I made a lot of bad pitches, and I might have been out of there in the first inning if Ernie Banks didn't go after a bad pitch and hit into a double play," Simmons said. Gordon Richardson, the winning pitcher, faced only one batter, Burton, who hit into a double play.

Mike Cuellar is to pitch against the Cubs' Larry Jackson, a 17-game winner, in a Ladies' day game this afternoon. Brock stole his thirty-eighth base. Boy-o-Boyer! AB.R.H. WILMINGTON, Sept. 5 (AP)--A lone bettor, his identity undisclosed, won the twin double at Brandywine Raceway last night worth $60,654.70. Michaels Reinstated PITTSBURGH, Sept. 5 (AP)- Angels Are A.L.

Devils LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5 (UPI) -The city of the Angels is getting a reputation in American League circles this season as a possible graveyard of pennant hopes. The Los Angeles Angels have long since disappeared from A.L. flag contention but they appear to have appointed themselves as the "spoilers" for other contenders. The Angels dealt the defending champion New York Yankees two devastating blows Wednesday and Thursday and they came right back last night to beat the Baltimore Orioles, 7-1 and shave their first -place margin to one percentage point over the Chicago White Sox.

Heading into the second game of the three- game series in Los Angeles tonight, the Orioles cling precariously to first place with a .600 percentage compared to the of the White Sox who pulled out a 6-5, 10-inning triumph over the Cleveland Indians last night. Elsewhere in the A.L., the Yankees snapped out of their batting lethargy with a 9-7, 10-inning win over the Kansas City Athletics, the Detroit Tigers beat the Washington Senators, 1-0 and the Min-' nesota Twins blitzed the Boston Red Sox, 14-3. Joe Adcock drove in four runs with two homers and a single. Jim Fregosi and Bobby Knoop ST. LOUIS POST- DISPATCH SPORTS 6 A Sept.

5, 1964 had two hits each to lead an 11-hit Angel attack on Robin Roberts and three successors. Fred Newman stopped the Orioles on six hits to win his eleventh game against eight losses. Adcock's two homers gave him a career total of 302 and put him twentieth on the list. The White Sox came from behind four times and finally won out in the tenth inning when Pete Ward and Bill Skowron hit successive homers. Ron Hansen also homered for the White Sox, whose usually solid defense committed five errors.

Hoyt Wilhelm, who pitched only one inning, received credit for his seventh victory against eight losses. Elston Howard's run-scoring single and a two-run double by Joe Pepitone were the big blows of the Yankees' four-run tenth inning rally. The Athletics threw a scare into the Yankees when Nelson Mathews hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning but Bill Stafford got out of trouble to preserve Pete Mikkelsen's fifth win. Mickey Mantle also homered for the Yankees and Ken Harrelson connected for the Athletics. Dave Wickersham, with ninthinning relief aid from Fred Gladding, scored his seventeenth victory for the Tigers, who tallied the game's only run in the second inning when Don Demeter.

doubled, moved to third on Bill Freehan's single and scored on Norm Cash's sacrifice fly. The third straight shutout loss moved the Senators to within one of the a major league record. Rookie Tony Oliva drove in four runs with his twenty and thirtieth homers, Harmon Killebrew hit his forty-fifth and Zoilo Versalles his eighteenth as the pounded out fifteen hits behind the nine-hit pitching of Jim Grant. Killebrew's threerun homer increased his major league leading runs batted in total to 102. Bob Heffner suffered his tenth loss for the Red Sox.

Torres Gains Sport Shorts Edge Over Hawks' Tormohlen Retires Brennan GENE TORMOHLEN, former Favorites in the tournament, MIAMI BEACH, Sept. 5 (AP)--Jose Torres needed a strong rally in the closing rounds last night to protect his No. 4 welterweight ranking, against Gomeo Brennan, game 3-1 underdog. The Puerto Rican from New York won the eighth and ninth rounds to pick up the margin of victory over his smaller opponent from the Bahamas in the next-to-last of the television fights. The 20-year TV run ends next Friday night when Don Fullmer opposes Dick Tiger.

5 (UPI) -Frank Thomas was belittled as "the donkey" by the New York Mets but to the World Series hopeful Philadelphia Phillies he's "the lion." In many ways, the 35-year-old Thomas was a symbol of the Mets' frustration. He is a slow runner and an awkward fielder in addition to having earned a reputation as the most stubborn man in baseball. General Manager John Quinn of the Phillies knew all this, of course, when he acquired Thomas on Aug. 6 but he was interested in something else: Thomas's bat. He knew big Frank still swung a dangerous home run bat and he knew the Phillies might have great need for such a weapon in their bid to win theistirst National League flag since It is significant that the Phillies led the National League by games on the day they acquired Thomas and now hold a game margin.

Thomas has more than lived up to Quinn's expectations by hammering away at a .312 clip, hitting six homers and driving in 21 runs for the Phillies. What's more he's come through with key blows time and againjust as he did last night with a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning of the Phillies' 5-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Held to four hits and one run in six innings by rookie Dick Estelle, making his first big league start, the Phillies drew even at 3-3 on Thomas's homer and went on to beat relief pitcher Billy O'Dell on a double by Gus Triandos, singles by Johnny Callison and Ruben Amaro and delief pitcher Jack Baldschun's squeeze bunt. The loss dropped the Giants into fourth place, games behind the Phillies. The Milwaukee Braves knocked the second-place Cincinnati Reds games off the pace by beating them, 2-0; the Pittsburgh Pirates routed Houston Colts, 10-2 and the New York Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 after a 3-0 loss.
