Mr. Metz, the comptroller, has been at his wits' end to discover an available market for New York city bonds. He finds it almost impossible to secure purchasers for these bonds, even though the rate of interest be at 4 per cent, and although there is no reasonable doubt as to the soundness of the security. It has been observed recently that responsible contractors are reluctant about offering bids for contemplated public works, the reason beinj the fear that the city of New York may find difficulty in marketing its stock. If, therefore. New York city finds It difficult to tempt purchasers for long time clty bonds. behind which the security is unquestioned, it can cause no wonder that the banks of this city refuse at the present time to make any investment in San Francisco bonds. The State of New York finds itself in an almost amusing, because so highly inconsistent and paradoxical. situation.

Another topic was caused bv the presumably correct report that two or three of the more important banks of this city have declined to make any offering for bonds to be issued by th city of San Francisco.
