Bill Schwab of the SfcQiarles County Sheriff department. By Robin Seaton Jefferson Special to the Post-Dispatch A new program at Crossroads Regional Hospital in Wentzville is 'offering safety and crime prevention tips to older adults. "The Seniors Behavioral Health Program, along with Sgt. Bill Schwab of the St Charles County Sheriffs Department, has started a monthly seminar on various approaches seniors can use to prevent becoming crime victims. The first rule in crime prevention at home is to utilize the element of time, Schwab said.

"The goal is to extend the time it takes for a burglar to break in slow that person down," he said Schwab recommended that older adults install peep holes in their doors as well as dead-bolt locks, adding that most chain locks are often ineffective as they are fastened to the weakest part of the door, its frame. Criminals will use any tactic that will gain them entry without a struggle, Schwab said. "They may say, 'My car broke down. Can I use the or they may be selling widgets or say they're your long-lost cousin," he said. "If you don't know them, don't open the door." MARRIAGE Aug.

Although all alarm systems, locks and other attempts at securing one's home cannot be foolproof, these things do slow criminals, he said. "The more time they spend trying to get in, the more probable it is they're going to get caught. Schwab told seniors to view their homes from the inside out, looking at access to the entire house. Shrubs in front of the house should not be taller than three feet as they provide good hiding places for burglars. Often people put broom nan dies in their sliding glass doors, believing these will deter criminals; however, the doors lift out as well as slide from side to side.

Schwab recommends drilling a 45-degree hole in the door frame on the side that does not move and inserting a nail to prevent the door from lifting out. Schwab said a burglar was more likely to pass up a house with the following: light fixtures illuminating the front and back entrance, the garage and driveway; shrubbery that has been kept trimmed and away from windows and doors; the presence of a dog in the yard or in the home; window stickers indicating your property is marked with a special identification number; or noise or lights from inside the house indicating that the owners are home. The seminars at Crossroads will take place the third Friday of each month in multipurpose room 101 of the medical building behind the hospital. For more information on the seminars, call Lisa Tackett at 636-327-1115. LICENSES Kevin A.
