Gentile Sparks U.S. Victory Time 14-1 Pick at Aintree By Dent McSlcimmlng MEXICO CITY, March 19 A powerful scoring punch supplied by St. Louisan Carl Gentile had an inspiring influence on the United States Olympic soccer Zone Standings W. I. T.

However, given a chance in a LONDON, March 19 (AP) -The bookies were all smiles today as they awaited Saturday's Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree.

The reason for the glee was the victory yesterday of a 33-1 ond half, U.S. tied the score after only seven minutes when Dick Schweinert of Milwaukee scored with a well-placed short shot. Eight minutes later, in a move through the left wing, Panama's revamped lineup, Gentile ham- "Louis. The fifth St. Louisan on the squad, Bill Eppy, contributed heavily to the victory with his steady work at left halfback.

Hausmann has a sprained right foot. One of the game's finest performers was the courageous little goalie, De Long. His diving, tumbling saves robbed Panama of several goals. Again the U.S. defenders were superb.

Myron Krasij of Hartford, Bob Gansler of Milwaukee and Bob Watson of Philadelphia formed the fast, rugged fullback line; Eppy and Wostl' composed the effective halfback line of Wo. Coach George Meyer of Chicago lined up his forwards in a combination of five: Schweinert, McBride, Gentile, Adolf Bach-meier of Chicago and Wolanow. Gentile's first score, made at 27 minutes, put his team in front for the first time.

He scored in typical Gentile style, finishing off with a booming shot after a clever solo advance of 12 yards. His second, scored 11 minutes later, was the finishing touch to a mutiple pass effort in which fellow St. Louisan Pat McBride had an important part. Both Gentile and McBride are sophomore students at St. Louis University.

Two of the goal-getters were reserves who had not played in the 1-0 losing game of last Mon-, day. Schweinert replaced Chica-goan Rudy Getzinger at outside right, and Gentile came in as a replacement for Chicagoan Leo DeFort. Another lineup change was the insertion of Abe Wolanow of New York at outside left for the injured Larry Hausmann of St. i 9 I VJJ The Lincolnshire result left few big spring doubles alive for Saturday's race of 4V2 miles over 30 towering obstacles. In doubles, bettors try to link winners for the two big races.

The National odds are unlikely to shift at today's call-over by Britain's top bookies. A field of 37, which could be pared to 25 before post time, remains with Time, at 14-1, the favorite. Flying Wild, owned by Raymond Guest of New York, and Team Spirit, owned by John K. Goodman of Tucson, carry U.S. hopes.

Flying Wild was quoted at 16-1 and Team Spirit at 23-1. Others still entered are: April Rose, Ayala, Baxier, Beau Nor-mand, Border Flight, Centre Circle, Claymore, Cornerg, Dancing Rain, Eternal, Gale Force, Groomsman, John O'Groats, Jonjo, Kilmore, Laffy and L'Empereur. Also: Lizawake, Loving Record, Merganser, Out and About, Pappageno's Cottage, Pas Seul, Peacetown, Pontin-Go, Purple Gang Tournament favorite Mexico, held to a scoreless tie in the first half, came back with a tremendous push to down Surinam, 6-0, in the second game of last night's doubleheader, played before about 12,000 noisy fans. The stage is now set for what could be an interesting final match between Mexico and the United States, second game of tomorrow night's doubleheader. The outcome of the first game on the program, between Surinam and Panama, will not likely affect the championship standing.

Even if the United States should upset Mexico (a development highly unlikely), Mexico's high goal harvest of 11 goals against 1 in two games would be a determining factor. Not until the twenty- seventh minute of the second half did the U.S. team get the upper hand over Panama.
