ST.L0UI3 POST DISPATCH 2'. 3C ST. LOUIS TEACHERS ARE IN BIG DEMAND Stix Baer (Fuller DOWNTOWN. RIVER ROADS Piff Public schools from New York to Guam are competing for St. Louis-trained teachers.

Mis Geraldine Hufker, assistant director of teacher of placement at St. Louis University, reported that her office had three jobs available for every two science, mathematics or foreign language teachers graduated by the university. Representatives from public and private schools in California, New York and neighboring midwestern states visit the campus in search of likely faculty members, she said. Graduates are teaching in all SO states and overseas. Though most alumni prefer to teach in the St.

Louts metropolitan area. California, Colorado and New York City also are favored locations. Teacher Recruiting A nationwide survey published by the Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. of Minneapolis said that many public school districts now seek new teachers as vigorously as defense plants comb campuses for newly graduated engineers and scientists. Private schools do likewise.

Both compete with the armed services recruiting teachers for American at overseas military bases. College recruiting even reaches overseas. The London Daily Telegraph reported more than 70 professors and instructor leave British universities annually for posts in the United States. Starting salaries are comparable to those in some industries. Beginning teachers with bachelor degrees make $4500 to J5100 in elementary and secondary education, Miss Hufker said.

College starting salaries range from $5000 to $5500, but salaries for experienced teachers are i.ot keeping pace proportionately with beginners' pay. (In the St. Louis public school system, a teacher with a Ph.D. degree must work about 18 years to achieve a salary of $9500). Receives 229,1 Calls Leo A.

Eason, director of educational placement for Washington University, said that last year his bureau received 2293 calls from all sections of the nation for his 117 graduating elementary teachers. There were 3047 offers for 229 new secondary instructors. For the 55 candidates for college teaching jobs there were 2309 places available. Because most of his graduates, preferred urban areas, country school vacancies were the hardest to fill. L.

H. Diekroeger, director of personnel for the St. Louis Board of Education, said that public schools here need more English, science, mathematics and physical education teachers. He reported an acute shortage of specially trained teachprs for the mentally retarded. Lack of high school teachers, he said, has led to partial waiving of a requirement for an MA degree.

Washington University offers a special degree of master of arts in education to college graduates who wish to become teachers several years after finishing college. This course enables middle-aged men and women to enter the profession, Eason explained. "Job opportunities in teaching are increasing every year for qualified persons more than 45 years' old, even beginners," he said. FUNERAL IS TOMORROW FOR. J.
