"If you look at the evolutionary record, we've moved from a more robust form to a more gracile form as a species" in overall features. In separate experiments in Scotland and Japan, researchers created a composite "average face for a man and a woman from about 30 digital photos. The faces then were altered at key points, including the eyes, hps, noses and eyebrows, to make them more feminine or more masculine. Ninety-two volunteers college students and staff members, ages 18 to 44, including 44 women were asked to rate the faces according to such factors as warmth, emotionality, honesty, intelligence and dominance.

Both men and women preferred more feminine faces. The researchers said the results also reflect the natural tendency to favor youth when seeking a mate. The masculine faces tended to The Associated Press LONDON Given a choice between a dewy-looking Leonardo DiCaprio type and a rugged Sean Connery sort of guy, women may be naturally attracted to the man with the more feminine face, researchers say. A group of Scottish psychologists studying sexual behavior report that women tend to prefer the faces of men with more feminine features because they are perceived as gentler and more trustworthy. The researchers theorize that this preference is not just a 1990s concept of beauty but something that is hard-wired into us by evolution: Evolution has seen to it that women choose men who are likely to be more loyal mates and better fathers to their children.

"We speculate that the preference has been around for a long time," said Ian Penton-Voak of the University of St. Andrews in Fife, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Sean Connery (above) or Leonardo DiCaprio? Compiled By Harry Levins Post-Dispatch Senior Writer 5 By Gael Pennington Post-Dispatch Television Critic After more than a quarter of a century, anchor Don Marsh says he's out of the television news business in St. Louis.

Marsh was unable to come to terms with KDNL (Channel 30) on a new contract and has left the station. "Frankly, I'm surprised that we couldn't work this out," Marsh said Wednesday. "I wanted a three-year contract, two or three years, and they wanted one (year). So I'll just move on to other things." Channel 30 general manager Tom Tipton said he "would have loved for Don to have stayed." He said the station had offered Marsh a three-year contract, but with options to renew after each of the first two years, a point that Marsh and his agent would not accept. Tipton called Marsh "one of the most decent men I've ever met, and one who'd lend credibility to any news organization he chose to join." Marsh, 59, said he didn't plan to seek work in television, in St Louis or elsewhere.

Instead, he'll devote his time at his other business, In the Line of Duty, which produces police training videos. Marsh joined Channel 30 in 1995. In September 1994, after 23 years on the air at KTVI (Channel 2), he split with the station rather than give up anchoring to return to reporting. Marsh's departure leaves two major openings at Channel 30. News director David H.

Cohen, on the job only since March 23, resigned Monday under pressure after being suspended for making a racial joke in a news meeting. His replacement will be the fourth news director in the 3V2 years since Channel 30 began a newscast During that time, the station has also switched network affiliation (to ABC from Fox) and ownership (Sinclair Broadcast Group bought Barry Baker's River City Broadcasting in 1996). In May, the last major ratings period, the 10 p.m. newscast on Channel 30 was No. 5 in the time period.

Assistant news director Carol Sheer will act as news director, and Leslie Lyles, the only remaining member of the team that launched Channel 30's newscast, will anchor solo, while the station searches for replacements, Tipton said. The scandal has been a boon to late-night comics. The Center for Media and Public Affairs says that from Jan.

1 through July 31, Jay Leno, David Letter-man, Conan O'Brien and Bill Maher told a total of 1,172 jokes about Clinton and sex. And that was before this month's develop-ments about Monica Lewinsky. Leno leads the parade with 545 Clinton sex jokes; Letterman trails with 364. But the center's Bob Mulligan fails to see the humor. "These jokes have not uplifted anyone's spirits," he tells The Baltimore Sun.

LENO: The joke's on Bill on the life (and death) of Princess Diana. The show's official opening is Oct. 1. But mindful of the opportunity for hype, producers will put on the stage reading Monday, the first anniversary of Diana's death. The title role goes to one Kendra Munger, 23, until now a regional and dinner theater performer.

"I was really devastated when she died," Munger tells the New York Post. "I sat glued to the TV for 12 straight hours." She insists she still gets teary-eyed when she works on her lines for the show. Says Munger "I'm approaching Diana as a very real human being." Adds the Philade-phia Inquirer: "Save divinity for the sequel!" Camilla who?
