ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH NORTH THURSDAY, AUGUST 13, 1998 N7 Whats Happening CLARISSA START ON GARDENING http: www.stlnet.com Botanical Gardens Kemper Center never fails to amaze and inform in optimum condition. Fountains are a special feature of many of the gardens, and children love the one in this area with its raccoon figures. The secret garden was next, mostly white, pink and blue flowers, "a very pretty, gentle garden, June described it. An unfamiliar plant caught my eye; orthosiphum stamineus, I copied from the marker, also known as white cat's whiskers.

White phlox and blue veronica were among the plants grown there, too. Nearby is the display backyard garden, again filled with ideas for a typical city garden. On a more ambitious scale is the immense perennial border, where the floral picture changes constantly. Another special area is called the garden for all, especially for those with disabilities. It has raised beds and other accessible flowers and vegetables including a vertical garden of plants that grow in a wall of spaghnum moss.

A water garden, a knot garden, a garden for testing new plants and displaying this year's A.A.S. winners, a scented garden, a rose border, a hedge bed and a special garden grown by the Monsanto Co. Kemper Center has all this and much more. We came back with pages of1 scribbled notes, ideas, enthusiasm and a message for the moonflower -vining wildly in our backyard. COMING EVENTS: The St.

Have you been to the Kemper Home Gardening Center at Missouri Botanical Garden lately? I hadn't so I was happy to note that our St. Louis Horticultural Society was having a tour of the facilities as its program last Friday and that June Ilutson, who is in charge of its 26 gardens, would be our guide.

Since our programs begin at 7:30 p.m. and the days are growing shorter, it was a quick tour but a real eye-opener to the inspirational things being done there. "Kemper Center is an educational facility," June told us, 'and we're committed to showing the best in home gardening. As elaborate as it may seem at first glance, the plants are all ones that can be grown at home To help gardeners duplicate the gardens shown, a computer in the center is available for visitors to enter the name and number of any plant and learn of local or mailorder sources where they can obtain it. After all, as June pointed out, A love of plants is what drives us all to do this with such a passion.

A garden is never done, and that's especially true here where we get things to the point where they're looking good and then we take them all out so we can illustrate something else. We change our annuals spring, summer and fall to show what can be grown here." We Could only skim the 26 separate growing areas but here are a few impressions. The entry courtyard is a focal point with annual displays chosen for summer durability. Even experts have their problems, and the soil turned out to be too alkaline for the river birch tree and other acid lovers planted there so is being constantly amended. Salvia, lantana, chenille plant and a richly colored purple coleus were among the stalwarts in bloom there.

Around the corner is the terrace garden, principally a container garden to give an idea of what can be grown in pots of all sizes. One of the biggest was a datura, a plant I've been trying to acquire for three years from a favorite mailorder source. Its white flowers are huge and fragrant; June suggested I try growing it from seed next year. Mandevilla is another of the container plants, and there are 30 hanging baskets all spilling blooms ST. Florissant, Mo juam ja Postal Post Office wiil move to Woodson, Palmer Continuedfrom Page Nl One resident expressed concern about more traffic. Others welcomed the idea and thanked the postal service for staying in Overland. While the City Council also approved a flurry of bills, politics dominated the agenda. The meeting turned into a shouting match when resident Jimmy Smith talked about the federal probe of allegations of illegal conduct by officials. He also asked for the resignations of Mayor Bob Dody and City Attorney Robert Herman.

Both refused. Dody has said that the allegations, some of which involve the former mayor, were false. Resident Arnie Dienoff called for a police investigation of Councilman Mark Brown and Detective Donald Gault. He alleged that they were "illegally and fraudulently using police services, police information and police resources for personal and political gain." Police Chief James Herron said later that no evidence or proof had been submitted to bolster Dienoffs claim. Herron said an investigation would not be necessary.

In another point of contention, officials argued whether municipal employees should have been allowed to take part in the police department's golf tournament to raise money for the DARE anti-drug program. Councilman William Hohman objected to police and public works and parks employees taking time off during the workday to play golf. He then was told that some of the employees used compensatory time owed them to attend the golf match. Hohman suggested that the fund-raisers be scheduled on weekends, in the future. 1W TIGER By Bud Blake this tastes MUST 66 a II Call Us For Fair, Friendly And Quality Workmanship 2787m Oay I w- 730 bikesuk Plaza St.aaries,M06ffll I nnniyrr tike St.
